Discouraged?

by TerryLema March 9, 2023

I have two email accounts. I get a daily verse in each. One such verse last week was out of Joshua 1, “Be strong and courageous.”

After reading my daily verse, I decided to go back and read the full chapter. Joshua is commanded four times in that chapter to “be strong and courageous.”

God commands him three times in verses 6-9, and the people command him in the closing verse 18. Each time there is a slightly different emphasis. He will need to be strong and courageous because he must distribute the land, he must observe the whole instruction of Moses, and he must lead even when there is opposition in his own people.

It was the command to “be strong and courageous” in verse 9, however, that engaged my thinking this morning. “Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged [dismayed], for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” [HCSB]

Joshua needed strength and courage to battle both fear and discouragement. We often understand the need to have strength and courage when fear arises, but God also reminds Joshua that he will need strength and courage when faced with discouragement.

That OT word translated dismayed or discouraged means “to be shattered.” There are so many things in this life, so many things that spring up suddenly that can dismay or discourage us. I battle two chronic diseases. Sometimes they are under control and they influence my daily life only a little bit, and sometimes they exert themselves in greater measure and they influence my daily life a lot.

It is easy to allow discouragement to come in. It is then I need to remember God’s command to Joshua to “be strong and courageous,” and “to not be afraid or discouraged [dismayed],” AND to also remember the source of my strength and courage, “for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Strong and Courageous

by TerryLema January 22, 2022

The opening chapter of Joshua is so rich with truths. Four times in Joshua 1 God reminds Joshua to be strong and courageous.  This was after Moses telling Joshua the same thing twice in Deuteronomy. [Joshua 1:6, 7, 9, 18; Deuteronomy 31:7, 23]

The reason Joshua could be strong and courageous was because God promised to be with him wherever He went as He took the Promised Land.

The reason Joshua would need to be strong and courageous is found in Chapter 1:16-17 when the people responded. “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go.  We will obey you, just as we obeyed Moses in everything.” [HCSB]

The people’s response to Joshua always makes me laugh. It must have made Joshua cringe remembering how not-so-great they were at obeying Moses.

Joshua had been given a difficult task. He had to take over for a powerful leader, Moses. And the people who were to take the Promised Land were the children of those who had participated in the Exodus from Egypt. While young and strong, they had not seen the marvelous miracle working power of God in the plagues or the parting of the Red Sea.

The task in front of Joshua was enormous, but God reminded Joshua that He would be with Him just as He was with Moses. That would be enough for Joshua.

The task before us is often enormous, but Jesus reminded us that He would be with us even to the end of the age. That is enough for us. [Matthew 28:20]

Me?

by TerryLema May 12, 2020

Saturday morning Bob went fishing. He needed to go fishing. He needed to get away for a bit. I needed him to go fishing. It has been a long couple months for both of us! The house was quiet, the sun had come up and was beginning to shine through the living room windows. I was just sitting peacefully in my rocker thinking about what it must have been like for Joshua as he stood by the Jordan River ready to enter the Promised Land.

His mentor, Moses, was dead. He had been appointed by God to lead a few million people who had grown up in the wilderness, only one of whom (Caleb) had seen the marvelous work of God in the Exodus from Egypt. What thoughts were running through his mind at that moment?

I know what my thoughts would have been … “God, are you crazy? Me? You want me to lead this mob without the help and guidance of Moses? What are You thinking?” I guess that why God chose Joshua and not me.

Yet, I think Joshua might have been a bit nervous about his undertaking because three times in the opening chapter of the Book of Joshua, the LORD tells Joshua to “Be strong and courageous!” [vs 6, 7, 9]

Joshua had no idea what the next few years held for him. He did not know if the battles would be easy or extreme. He could not see into the future. He could only trust that the LORD who commanded him to be strong would be the LORD who would walk with him through each one.

Paul commanded believers to also be strong and courageous. “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be [people] of courage; be strong.” [1 Cor 16:13]

Like Joshua, we have no idea what the next few years might hold for us. We do not know if the battles will be easy or extreme. We cannot see the future. We can only trust that the LORD will walk through each one with us.

Be strong, beloved, and courageous!
