Help

Abundantly Available

by TerryLema January 21, 2024

I went back to Psalm 46 this morning. While I concentrated on verse 10 yesterday, “Be still and know that I am God,” it was verse 1 that had my attention this morning. “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.” [NKJV]

The Holman translates verse 1 as: “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.”

As I read through that verse in various translations, I stumbled across a footnote which defined “very present help” as “An abundantly available help.”

I know God has been my help during the times of trouble that shadowed my life in the past. But I live in the present—the now. I need God to be my refuge and strength today. I need to know that no matter what life, the enemy of my soul, or the world throws at me, my God is my “abundantly available help” now.

When Jesus gave the “Great Commission” to His disciples (“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you”), He also gave them the greatest of promises. “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” [Matthew 28:19-20 HCSB]

In that promise, “I am with you always,” Jesus promised that He “is our refuge and strength, [our] very present help in trouble.”

Thank you, LORD!

The Weak

by TerryLema October 25, 2022

I am in 1Thessalonians 5:14: “And we exhort you, brothers: warn those who are irresponsible, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” [5:14 HCSB]

Four commands are given by Paul in that one little verse. We are to warn or admonish (counsel, exhort) those who are irresponsible in their faith. We are to comfort those who are discouraged.

The third command is that we are to help the weak.  Paul gave a similar command in Romans 15:1: “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” [HCSB]

The strong in faith are responsible (we have an obligation) to support those who are weak.  Paul does not tell us what that weakness was in Thessalonica. Perhaps people were shrinking from the persecution and opposition so prevalent in that time. Maybe they were giving in to temptation or perhaps they needed to exercise their full Christian liberty.

Whatever the weakness was, Paul is firm about the obligation that we have to look out for our neighbors, to put their good before pleasing ourselves.

And if we are honest with ourselves, every one of us is probably “weak” in some area compared to others. When my weakness is voicing its dominance, I need the aid of others who are strong in that area to help. When I am strong in a particular area and another is weak, I need to put aside everything and build up my brother or sister.

Today, thank you LORD, that we are not in this battle alone. Thank you for providing the experiences in other’s lives to benefit us when we are struggling.

Hold My Hand

by TerryLema October 24, 2021

Isa 41:13: “For I, Yahweh your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear, I will help you.” [HCSB]

God takes hold of our right hand. God speaks His assurance into our lives – “do not fear, I will help you.” Not, I might help you, nor I can help you, nor I could help you. His word to us is “I will help you.”

One of the things I miss most now that my children are all grown is little hands reaching up for me to hold. I miss that little hand in mine walking through stores or along pathways. I miss those little hands so trusting. Even my grandsons have grown beyond that hand-holding stage.

There is something exceedingly precious about holding the trusting hand of a child. I wonder if God feels the same way when we lift our hands to Him, when we ask Him to take hold because we are in need of help, or are fearful, or need comforting. I wonder if His heart soars when we place our hand in His and seek His guidance along unknown pathways or ask for His strength when we grow weak and weary.

Jesus said in Mark 10:15 that we must accept the kingdom of God as a little child. I’ve heard many a sermon on what that means, and not all the preachers arrived at the same conclusion. Perhaps it is this, the simplicity of placing our hand in the Mighty Hand of God—just as our children placed their little hands in ours.

Father, may I never think I can grow beyond my hand in Your hand. Amen.
