It’s interesting that two people can stand at the base of a great mountain and see two different things. One sees a challenge to embrace, the other sees something to fear or avoid.
When the children of Israel landed the first time at the border of the Promised Land, Moses sent 12 men to scout the land. Twelve men spent the same amount of time surveying the land; 12 men all saw the same things. But 2 men viewed what they saw differently than the other 10.
The report of the 10: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there…. We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” [Numbers 13:27-28, 31 NIV]
The report of the 2: “Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.’” [vs 30 NIV]
Two men, Caleb and Joshua, saw a challenge to embrace (with the power of God). Ten saw something to fear and avoid. Because the nation of Israel believed the ten rather than the two, they would spend the next 38 years wandering in the desert until that generation died. Caleb and Joshua would then lead the new generation into the very same Promised Land the spies had surveyed.
