Ain’t Going to Give Up – Is He!

by TerryLema August 22, 2022

Recently Pastor Laura at The Way talked about victory over the enemy. She brought her message from the life of David. As she spoke, she mentioned the Spirit of Fear. At that moment, I realized that a Spirit of Fear had entered my life last September when I was so sick.  I realized also that since I had failed to recognize what was going on, I also failed to deal with it appropriately.

I have been around death a lot in my life, beginning at the age of seven when I attended the service for my favorite aunt. The next year it was my grandfather. At the age of 16 after getting my driver’s license I became the transport for my neighbor to his medical appointments as he died from lung cancer.

As a Hospice Chaplain I confronted dying and death almost every day. That experience actually made me less afraid. Plus, faith in Christ Jesus whom I know is the “Resurrection and the Life,” brought great comfort. [John 11]

But when I got sick last September, something changed in me. Little bouts of fear would appear and rather than take authority over them, I would try to reason with them. Not a smart move. It only caused them to increase in frequency and momentum.

Until that moment in church a few Sundays ago when Pastor Laura’s message brought the problem into the light. I took authority over that Spirit of Fear in Jesus’ Name and haven’t been bugged since.

You do know, however, that the enemy of our soul never gives up! This morning when I opened my email inbox, I found a link to a local newspaper. I usually get the major and local news each morning from them – but today was different. Today they sent me a link to the “Daily Obituaries!”

I laughed so hard. The enemy never gives up. But my Savior and LORD never does either and the victory is in His Hands! “But thanks be to God, who [always] gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” [1 Corinthians 15:57 HCSB]

From Victory!

by TerryLema February 17, 2022

I like sports. Each time I watch a game, I look for the backstories. As I wrote yesterday, I was captured by the backstory of Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams. He and his wife are strong Christians, dedicated in their love and service to Christ Jesus.  One of the things he said following the game was that he had a vision from God a few years prior after the Rams lost a Super Bowl. God told him that they would return, win, and he would be the MVP. He told one person of his vision. That is exactly what happened.

He went on, however, and it is this statement that has encouraged my heart today. He said, “It was written already and I just got to play free, knowing that I got to play from victory, not for victory. I got to play in a place where I was validated not from anything that happened on the field but because of my worth in God and my Father.”

He played from victory, not for victory. God had already spoken the ending. That was just a football game. How much more for us as believers?  We, too, play from victory (obtained by Christ Jesus), not for victory!

1 Corinthians 15:57: “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Matthew Henry wrote in his commentary on this verse: “Praise for the victory (it is great and glorious in itself), and for the means whereby it is obtained (it is given of God through Christ Jesus), a victory obtained not by our power, but the power of God; not given because we are worthy, but because Christ is so, and has by dying obtained this conquest for us. Must not this circumstance endear the victory to us, and heighten our praise to God? Note, How many springs of joy to the saints and thanksgiving to God are opened by the death and resurrection, the sufferings and conquests, of our Redeemer! With what acclamations will saints rising from the dead applaud him! How will the heaven of heavens resound his praises for ever! Thanks be to God will be the burden of their song; and angels will join the chorus, and declare their consent with a loud Amen, Hallelujah.”

Yes, Thanks be to God, Amen & Hallelujah!

The LORD’s Right Hand!

by TerryLema April 26, 2020

I am spending a couple days living in and praying through Psalm 118. When I read the verses God chose for today, my heart soared from this proclamation in the Old Testament to its fulfillment in the New. “Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: ‘The LORD’s right hand has done mighty things! The LORD’s right hand is lifted high; the LORD’s right hand has done mighty things!’” [ vs15-16]

The “Right Hand of the LORD” stands for Jehovah’s omnipotence, His power and strength. It is the place of authority, the place where intercession is made, and blessings and forgiveness are granted. Seated in that place is our LORD Christ Jesus.

Heb 12:2-3: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Everything in the world at this moment is designed to cause weariness and make us lose heart. The world’s message leads to hopelessness. It makes us dread each day, fear what we might have to face, and generates a desire to just quit. The world’s messages of fear are hard to ignore and difficult to escape.

Believers, however, hear and see a different message. We are told to fix our eyes on Jesus. We are also told why to do that – our Jesus is sitting in that place of authority and power. We are to remind ourselves of what He endured in order to be exalted to that place. He endured the cross with all its pain and shame for us. He took upon His Very Body, Soul and Spirit every sin, every perversion of all mankind and through that brought freedom and salvation for any who come to Him in repentance.

When we keep our eyes on Him, we keep our eyes on the Almighty Power and Glory of God. Then “Shouts of joy and victory [will] resound in the tents of [those made] righteous” through Him. That is where we should be looking right now. That is the message we should be heeding.

That is the message we should be shouting from our tents to this world of gloom and doom. Our God Reigns in Power and Authority. “The LORD’s right hand has done mighty things! The LORD’s right hand is lifted high; the LORD’s right hand has done mighty things!” Thank you, King Jesus. Amen & Amen.
