My Favorite Holiday!

by TerryLema November 22, 2023

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. It was a big event in our home when the kids were growing up. We gathered as family, invited friends and people who had nowhere else to go. I cooked for days. Probably drove the kids crazy trying to get and keep the house clean. We would often play games, such as Trivial Pursuit, while football played out on the television throughout the day.

Even after the kids were grown and had their own families, I still loved family gatherings on Thanksgiving Day.

This year, it will be a bit quieter. We are going to our daughter’s house. There will be a few of us and we are looking forward to a Cajun style thanksgiving meal catered by a local restaurant. I am making pies, and maybe deviled eggs. But probably won’t be spending days cooking!

Still, it will be Thanksgiving. Whether we are in a large crowd or a small intimate dinner, it is a day that is dedicated to being thankful. As Christians, we have so much for which to be thankful. I have been focusing on many of our blessings throughout this month.

The scriptures are clear that it is to be thanksgiving and praise that are to be on our lips when we enter the Presence of the LORD.

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name.” [Psalm 100:4 HCSB]

What a privilege! To come before Him with praise…to give Him thanks for all He has done for us. Amen

Rounding the Corner

by TerryLema September 10, 2023

September is probably my favorite month. September always feels like we are rounding the corner to my favorite time of year. It can still be warm, but it guarantees cooler times ahead. It promises the aroma of fallen leaves and trees of brilliant colors. It reminds that the holiday season is on its way. I think I could live forever in September.

I know we are still a couple weeks away from the official start of autumn, but something about September also reminds me to be thankful.  In September I always seem to re-start a season of thankfulness.  From here to the end of the year, my mind consistently returns to one passage of Scripture. “Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  [1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 HCSB]

God’s will for us is that we are joyful always, praying continually, and giving thanks – no matter the circumstances.

No one ever said God’s will for us is easy, but He did tell us that His burden is light.  And nothing lightens our burdens like being joyful in the Spirit amid them.  Nothing makes us stronger than having ready prayer flowing forth.  And nothing makes us better able to persevere or endure those circumstances that are difficult than a constant offering of thanksgiving from a heart that has been captured by God’s grace.

This, of course, should be our attitude all year long.  I know I set out to make it so.  Yet when September comes, there seems to be a refreshing of my spirit that arrives with a renewed commitment to be joyful always, praying continually, and giving thanks to my Lord and Savior.

Thank You For Your Righteousness

by TerryLema July 11, 2023

Spending the summer in the Psalms is the spiritual emphasis at church July through August. Each week we read 30 psalms. As I read through each song, I am asking the LORD to “highlight” in my spirit something He wants me to think about.

Yesterday it was Psalm 5:11, shouting “joy forever!”

Today, it was a reminder in Psalm 7 to thank the LORD. “I will thank the Lord for His righteousness.” [vs 17 HCSB]

Other translations remind us to thank the LORD “according to” or “due to” or “because of” His righteousness. But when I read that I am to thank the LORD “for” His righteousness, I had to stop and think.

Have I ever actually thanked God for being righteous?  I thank Him all the time for what He has done, is doing and will do for me. I thank Him for His wonderful creation, for His salvation, for His love and compassion. But I can’t remember if I ever thanked Him for His righteousness.

God will always do what is right, according to His Holiness. That is so important! It means God never changes, never deviates from what is right. I never need to worry that the God who saved me will one day abandon me.

I think I should have thanked Him for His righteousness every day of my life! I think I will start today! Amen.

Thanksgiving 2022

by TerryLema November 7, 2022

Thanksgiving Day this year is November 24. That is 17 days from today. As Christians, our attention should be on praising and thanking our Savior every day, but I have talked to many a believer who has problems with praise and thanksgiving.

Their attention is often on the temporal things going on around them – all of which will pass away at some point. Our praise and thanksgiving to our eternal LORD, however, will never die. I believe our praises will echo through the ages of eternity.

Sometimes we struggle with praise and thanksgiving because we just do not know where to begin. So, I thought for the next 17 days, let’s go back to some basics. If you want to know about the wonders of God, one of the best places to start is in the Psalms. They often tell us about who God is and what we are in relation to Him. They plainly express praise and things for which to be thankful.

Psalm 3 in my translation is titled, “Confidence in Troubles Times.” That pretty well sums up why we should be reading Psalm 3 in our day! After expressing the scorn of the foes, David reminds us, “You, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.” [vs 3 HCSB]

God is our shield “around” us. To me that says He protects us in every direction. North, south, east, west, no matter where our foes try to attack, God is our shield.

He is also our “glory.” I am an almost 76 years old woman of little consequence to this world. I will have little acclaim or honor from this world when I leave it one day. But my God – He is my glory! When I enter His presence, when I proclaim “I am a child of God and I have come home,” all heaven will rejoice! Not because of what I have done, but because of Whose I am.

And my God “lifts up my head.” The world will try to beat me down, but it can only do so much. When the LORD lifts up my head, I see Him in all His glory and know that I am His!

Thank you, LORD. Today our praise focuses on You as our shield, glory, and the lifter of our head! Amen

Thanksgiving! Revised?

by TerryLema November 1, 2022

Thanksgiving month has arrived. So grateful! I have so much in my life that is difficult, but I also have so much in my life for which to be thankful. And, of course, when I start to count my blessings, I find they far outweigh the trials.

This year inflation is hitting hard. I read that turkeys will cost 75 percent more this year than last. Gas prices are still way too high compared to last year, so traveling will cost more. I heard cranberries are in short supply. That doesn’t bother some people – and I already grabbed some I found in the store. They are waiting in the freezer for the day!

We might have to revisit the way we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, with what we cook, who we gather with, and what we do. It can still be, however, a day we offer thanks for all we have in this country, for all we have as the people of God.

God loves us. He has pledged His fidelity to us. We are His children. If we have nothing else for which to give thanks, we can thank Him for loving us and calling us to His side. Even when we walk through dark valleys, He is with us. (Psalm 23:4)

Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; it is more than a holiday-month. In Ephesians 5, there is a section in my Bible titled consistency in the Christian life. Part of that section reminds us that we are to “be filled by the Spirit: speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the LORD, giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ.” [vs 18a-20 HCSB]

That sounds like every day to me!

Today: Thank you LORD for filling me with Your Spirit. May I sing and praise You with all my heart!

Ah, October!

by TerryLema October 5, 2022

Every year about this time I think about this time of year. October. I have a love-hate relationship with October, which I usually vent right around – well – October.

I love the weather in October. If I could have October weather all year long, I would. Cool mornings, warm, but not hot afternoons. Perfect for walking. Perfect for sweatshirts. No intense heat. No intense cold. Yep, that is the “love” part of my relationship with October.

Then there is the “hate” part of the relationship. Halloween. Horrible movies on television. Darkness – well, you get it. I do not like Halloween. I think kids should have the fun of dressing up and getting candy. But I hate that we dress our kids in evil and by doing so, give them the impression we think “evil” is fun.

While making my rounds walking in my neighborhood recently, I have encountered a lot of homes decorated with spiders (and their webs), skeletons, witches, ghouls, ghosts, and gravestones. So, I decided to do two things to brighten my walk and my days.

First was to haul my Christmas socks out. I love Christmas and now I am reminded of it every day as I wear my fun Christmas socks. (And I have a lot of them!)

Second, I decided to just fly over Halloween and celebrate two months of Thanksgiving instead. So, I am making my list of things in my life for which I am truly blessed. I will be adding one blessing to that list each day and thanking God for calling me to His side.

Today: I am thankful that I no longer dwell in darkness and fear. I live in the light. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom should I be afraid?” [Psalm 27:1 HCSB]

At Last

by TerryLema November 1, 2021

I have a love-hate relationship with the month of October. Weather-wise it is my favorite month of the year. Atmosphere-wise (Halloween), it is my least favorite. So, when I turn my calendar and see “November 1” each year, I rejoice!

Ugly is behind us and thanksgiving is before us. Of course, thanksgiving is always before us and with us, but too often our attention is drawn away by other things. Something about November 1 pulls my attention back to where it belongs … with all the things for which I am (and should always be) grateful.

I am thankful for so much this year. It appears after two plus years the PMR and GCA I have battled have gone into remission (or maybe totally disappeared). I survived a bout with COVID and am regaining strength and stamina. I will know shortly who my successor is at The Way, Middleton, and I see a new chapter of my life ahead beginning the first of the new year.

I know much is in turmoil, being sure of a new church, at 75 probably other health issues, finances, and such, but I have the assurance that my God knows … and cares … and nothing in His love for me will change.

James 1:17-18: “Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning. By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of truth so that we would be the firstfruits of His creatures.” [HCSB]

Read that verse again!  Our God is unchanging. He has declared His love for us “by His own choice,” and nothing will change that. People of this world often like us for what we can do for them, and we are constantly striving to impress them so that they will continue to like us. When we are sick, or old, or become less than useful by some circumstance, they will cast aside.

Not so with our God. He chose to love us. While we change, He never does … NEVER!

So, this November 1, I am most thankful that God’s love for me is not based on my changing nature, but on His unchanging one. Glory!

Thank you, Jesus, for …

by TerryLema April 22, 2021

I was reading a book recently and one of the chapters ended with, “Thank you Jesus for ….” The book’s author thanked Jesus for a spiritual truth and then thanked Him for chocolate!  I chuckled, especially since I often reach for spiritual truths and a bitter chocolate square on a difficult day.

It is April, about five months past Thanksgiving. Maybe we have been slacking a bit in our response to God for all He is doing in our lives. I think I have. My attention has been on other things the past month and my thanksgiving and praise has ebbed a bit.

I had my 11th infusion on Tuesday. Do I feel any better than after my 10th? Not really. Thank you, Jesus, for doctors who are concerned and trying to find a solution for my auto-immune diseases.

I have had my 2nd COVID vaccine and was able to go to California and spend time with my son, daughter-in-love and grandsons. Was it enough time?  Nope. Thank you, Jesus, for those that developed that vaccine that enabled Bob and I to go to California and hug our loved ones.

I woke up this morning with aches and pains from the disease and side effects from the infusion. Does my body hurt. Yep. Thank you, Jesus, for walking with me today, for letting me sense Your Presence with me on these difficult days.

All our bills are paid for this month and there is a little left over. Do I worry about paying the bills after I retire from the church? Yes. Thank you, Jesus, for my “daily bread” and for the assurance that I need not borrow trouble from tomorrow since today is all I need to concern myself with.

I am thankful today, Jesus, for the blossoming spring flowers, for the beautiful blue sky, for the everyday beauty around me.  I am thankful that I have family and friends that I love and who love me in return. What a glorious day to be alive in the LORD!

“Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” [1Thessalonians 5:18]

Happy Thanksgiving!

by TerryLema November 26, 2020

I like the way Paul begins his letters. He begins with “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Grace and Peace. If there is anything we need right now, it is grace and peace. Grace from God our Father, giving the strength to keep on keeping on no matter what the world is doing. Peace from the LORD Jesus Christ, our Prince of Peace, giving us rest in God while the world is losing its mind!

But then, as I read on in Philippians this morning, Paul reminded me that there is something I also need to be doing, that is giving thanks for you and praying for you.

“I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you, always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer.” [Philippians 1:3 HCSB]

On this Thanksgiving Day, I truly am thankful for all of you. Some of you I know personally, others I only see as names and pictures on Facebook. But I am always amazed and humbled that you take the time to read these daily devotions and often comment on them. You bless me abundantly, especially when you tell me something I wrote resonates with where you are in your walk with God. I am humbled.

Please know that I do give thanks for you … I pray with joy for all of you. I cannot wait until we all get to heaven and we get to spend time getting to know each other through eternity.

God bless each of you! And may His grace, mercy, and peace flood your souls this day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanking or Complaining?

by TerryLema November 25, 2020

Before we leave Psalm 95, we need to take note of not just its glorious beginning, but how it ends. The beginning is where we often focus. We are joyfully shouting because our God is Creator and Sustainer of all His Creation and because He is our Maker and our Shepherd.

We cannot, however, ignore the warning that comes at the end.

“Today, if you hear His voice: Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness where your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they had seen what I did. For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation; I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know My ways.’ So I swore in My anger, ‘They will not enter My rest.’” [vs 8-11 HCSB]

There is a warning that we are not to allow our hearts to become hardened. The psalmist uses an incident out of Exodus 17 where the people complained once again before the LORD. Even though they had seen mighty miracles, even though God proved Himself strong on their behalf repeatedly, still they complained.

Complaining is an easy trap to fall into, one that the enemy of our soul is always pushing us towards. Complaining is the opposite of thanksgiving. It narrows our vision and focus to only what is wrong. It pushes the awareness of God’s presence and the appreciation of His blessings out of sight.

When we complain we see only what we think we want or need that we do not have. We fail to see our Shepherd’s abundant mercy, grace, love, and care. Complaining drives us out of the Presence of our God and into a wilderness where we wander around hopeless and lost.

So, let us not harden our hearts. Instead let us lift our hearts with our hands in joyful and triumphant praise to our Great King.
