Storms

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

by TerryLema June 16, 2023

Last Friday night we went to an outdoor wedding in a neighboring town. It rained. Not just a light shower. It poured. In fact, our area was under a flood watch, expecting two inches of rain between 10Am-10Pm.

The wedding was at a vineyard and the venue was breathtaking. Set on the edge of a cliff, it overlooked a deep canyon. But in Idaho, in June, there is always the chance of rain. And this venue did not provide tents, or much shelter for guests. (They did provide umbrellas for which I am very grateful.) And thankfully, there was shelter for the bride and her attendants.

The start time for the wedding was delayed waiting for the storm to pass. When it did the wedding took place. Everyone was a little “damp,” but the bride was beautiful, the groom was handsome, and when all was said and done, it was a joyous time.

The next morning, I thought about how life often happens that way. We make our plans, good plans, but there are no guarantees that “life” won’t change what we planned. I was reminded that standing in that downpour what we were all seeking (and needed) was shelter from the storm.

“You are my shelter and my shield; I put my hope in Your word.” [Psalm 119:114 HCSB]

The Scriptures are full of God’s promises to be a shelter, a refuge, a fortress, a hiding place for all those who seek Him. He provides hope, compassion, reconciliation, salvation, an inheritance, and so much more. He is the Glory and the One who lifts our head when the storms of life threaten to beat us down.

Thank you, LORD.

Great Storms

by TerryLema February 21, 2023

“The greater the storm, the louder our song. We lift our voice up, we make your praise so glorious.”

That is a line from the song “Louder,” by Mark Redman.  That line, especially the first part, has been running through my mind repeatedly … the greater the storm, the louder our song!

Our world is ablaze with storms, both literal and figurative.  Weather patterns have been wild this year.  There have been earthquakes and volcanos, floods, and droughts. As bad as those disasters are, they have affected relatively few compared to the other kinds of storms.

Wars, conflicts, radicalism, mass murders, shooting sprees, persecutions, fears, anxiety.  It seems like the news opens every day with reports of the tempests that plague our world.

The church has felt herself assaulted in our country in ways we never thought possible.  Maybe that’s the problem, we never thought it possible!  We let our guard down.  We grew comfortable in our plush chairs and expected that would go on until Jesus came.  Whatever the reasons, in many areas of our society, Christian is no longer a welcome title.

So what should we do?  I truly believe God’s Spirit is energizing some of our new song writers and they are putting forth praise, urging us to catch the wind of the Spirit … The greater the storm, the louder our song!  The Spirit is telling the church to rise out of her plush chairs and begin to praise, praise louder and more fervently than ever before.  It’s time to sing praise, shout praise, dance praise, clap praise and live praise.

It’s time to open our doors and let the world see us and hear us praising our God! Probably even time to take our praise outside our doors!

Are We Done Yet?

by TerryLema July 29, 2022

Are we done yet with the heat! It has been near 100 degrees for weeks, sometimes a few degrees over and occasionally a few degrees under, but usually right around that 100 mark. I know “it’s a dry heat,” but it is still miserable.

The worse part about this time of year is the compound effect of hot days. Sure, in the spring we get a hot day now and again, but usually that is followed by some relief. The house cools down, the AC is not needed, windows are opened and walking outside once again becomes delightful.

When we hit these summer months of consistent hot temperatures, the house never cools down, the AC blasts 24 hours a day, mornings begin hot and walking outside is unbearable before the day barely begins.

As I sat here this morning, at 5 AM and 75 degrees already, I thought about the compound effect of not just the hot days, but the compound effect of the storms of life as well.

We can handle the occasional storm, but when they follow one on top of another, we get increasingly worn down and discouraged. That is where our nation, our society is right now.  Pandemic. Rising cost of food, gas. People being priced out of their homes and apartments. Mass Shootings. War. There is little around us on a daily basis to delight our hearts and minds.

Well, that is not exactly true. There is little around us on a daily basis to encourage us if we are only listening to the evening newscast. There is much around us to encourage us if we turn our attention to the daily Holy Spirit Good Newscast!

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17: “May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.”

Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by His Grace. Eternal Encouragement. That is sufficient for each and every day.

Storms in Life

by TerryLema June 26, 2022

Spring and summer in the Treasure Valley in Idaho are a constantly changing weather picture. We can be cold one day, blazing hot the next. But the best are the thunderstorms that just seem to appear out of nowhere.

A couple weeks ago such a thunderstorm hit us. The sky grew dark, and the wind began to howl. It began to pour. I could hear the thunder and lightning accompanying the noisy wind. Water came off the roof in buckets. It was great.  I stood in the doorway and watched the clouds race across the sky.  And then just as suddenly as it came up, it was gone. Weather peace descended again.

Everyone has storms in life. Sometimes they come up just like the Treasure Valley thunderstorms that dot our weather pattern in spring and summer.  It is when the storms are buffeting us that we need to remember that Jesus is our song amid the storm.

There is a marvelous song that I listen to during my worship walks, “Let It Be Jesus.”  It begins with these words, “Let it be Jesus. The first name that I call. Let it be Jesus. My song inside the storm”

My song inside the storm of life is this, “for me to live is Christ.” And one day when that final storm wins its battle over my body, I shall know firsthand that “to die is gain.”  [Philippians 1:21]

The Hollow of His Hand

by TerryLema March 30, 2020

Mosie Lister. You may not know that name, but hopefully you know some of the songs he’s written. One of my favorites is “Then I Met the Master.” I especially love the Booth Brothers rendition of it, which you can find on YouTube.

But this morning, the Mosie Lister song that ministers to my soul is, “Till the Storm Passes By.” The opening verse and chorus goes like this: In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face / While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place / ‘Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry / Keep me safe till the storm passes by. [Chorus] Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more / Till the clouds roll forever from the sky. / Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand / Keep me safe till the storm passes by.

It seems every time the news comes on or there’s an update from CDC or government, the storm howls a bit louder. Every time a new death occurs from COVID-19, the thunder crashes again. It seems no one knows when this storm will end. We are told to stay at home, and in Idaho that directive ends on April 15, but if you are like me, there’s this nagging feeling that wonders if they will extend it past that original date. We can hunker down for three weeks, but what if it becomes six or even nine weeks. How will that “shelter-in-place” affect our spiritual and emotional well-being.

It is then I sing those last lines of Mosie’s chorus, “Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand, keep me safe till the storm passes by.” And when I sing that chorus, I remember the words of Jesus.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” [John 10:27-30]

I listen to the voice of the Shepherd. I follow Him. I shall not perish. And nothing, no one, can take me out of the hands of my Savior and my Father.

Be comforted, beloved, storms end, God’s care for us never does.

Fear & Faith – Part 3

by TerryLema January 31, 2020

Let’s end this first month of 2020 with one last thought from Jesus and the disciples in the great storm recorded in Mark 4:35-41. (One of my favorite lessons that you’ve probably heard many times from me. But I remember what a bible college professor always said, “repetition increases remembrance!”)

Jesus had commanded the disciples in the boat with Him to go to the other side and they obeyed. Their obedience put them right in the midst of a very grave storm and they thought they were in danger of going under, all the while Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat, exhausted from that day’s work. Finally, the disciples wake Him and chastise Him for what they regarded as His lack of concern for them. After quieting the storm with a word, Jesus chastises them for their lack of faith.

Jesus understood the most dangerous thing for the disciples was not the storm – no matter how wildly it raged. The most dangerous part for them was their unbelief, their lack of faith in God’s ability to protect them and enable them to reach their goal – the other side.

Our greatest problems are within us, not around us. The true danger isn’t in the storm, it’s in our hearts. Hebrews 3:13 goes so far as to warn us about our “sinful, unbelieving heart” that has the power to turn us away from the Living God.

No storm can drive us to the bottom when Jesus is in the boat … no, we are guaranteed to get to the other side. But, but, our own hearts can turn us away from the Living God, and when that happens, even the mildest of storms may sink us.

Oh Father, keep our hearts of faith set securely in You. Amen.

Fear & Faith – Part 1

by TerryLema January 29, 2020

My message at The Way last Sunday was one of my favorite stories in the lives of the disciples – the calming of the storm in Mark 4:35-41. If you have a moment, grab your Bible and read those few short verses. There are so many lessons contained therein for us.

Jesus had been teaching all day. The crowds were so great and pressing upon Him that He had gotten into a boat and had it pushed a small distance from shore. It seems to have been a grueling session since later than night He told His disciples to take the boat to the other side of the lake (the Sea of Galilee). While they sailed, He went to the stern of the boat and fell asleep on a pillow.

He must have been exhausted as he did not awaken even when the storm came and intensified. His disciples were wide awake, however, during what Mark describes as a “squall,” literally a “hurricane of wind.” They were trying to keep their boat afloat and be obedient to what Jesus had commanded them – to go over to the other side.

I have met (and shepherded) some who think that if you are experiencing a trial, it is because you are in disobedience to the LORD. Their “proof” is always the example of Jonah who disobeyed, ended up in a storm and then a fish before finally being obedient.

But these disciples were obedient. Jesus said, “Let us go over to the other side,” and that is exactly what they were trying to do. [vs 35 NIV]

Sometimes we might find ourselves in a storm even though we are in perfect obedience to the will of God. Thankfully, when that happens, Jesus is in the storm with us!

Tomorrow – the fearful disciples awaken Jesus and learn a lesson about fear and faith.
