Ready

Ready!

by TerryLema November 5, 2023

A few years ago, I made a mistake. It was a big mistake that offended a couple of people. Making it right was not possible. I admitted my guilt and asked those I offended for forgiveness. They expressed surprise when I asked but were unwilling (or not ready) to grant forgiveness.

That is why every time I read Psalm 86, my heart is comforted. My comfort is contained in two words.

“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.” [Psalm 86:5 HCSB]

The first comfort is found in that word “ready.” Our LORD is ready to forgive. That word is “callach” and it means exactly how it is translated here, “ready to forgive.”

When I come to Him sincerely in repentance, there is no delay, no doubts, no refusal. My God is good, and He is ready to forgive.

The second comforting word is “abundant.”  That word is “rab” and it means much, many, and great. The mercy God gives is not stingy, or limited, or miserly. It is abundant “to all those who call upon” Him.

I am still waiting for those people I offended to grant their forgiveness. But I had forgiveness and abundant mercy the moment I called upon God and asked His forgiveness.

Thank you, LORD, for Your readiness to forgive! Amen.

He is There!

by TerryLema June 21, 2021

Recently we looked at God’s power and His willingness on our behalf. I keep going back to those three doxologies found in Ephesians, Jude, and Romans, each starting with those six wonderful words … “Now to Him who is able ….”

Able, the Greek word is dunamai and is the word from which we get our English word dynamite!  It means power.

I also remember Jesus’ willingness to bring that power to bear in the healing of a leper with the words, “I am willing.” [Mark 1:40-42]

As I once again contemplate those two words, willing and able, another phrase popped into my mind. “Ready, Willing & Able!”

Then the words of Psalm 46:1 began to minister to my heart … “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.” [HCSB]

You probably learned the last part of that Scripture as “a very present help in times of trouble.”  [NKJV]

No matter which version you are most comfortable with, the truth contained in those words tells us that our God is ready.  If you read the next verses in that song, you will discover He is ready even though the earth trembles, mountains topple, seas roar.  The LORD is our refuge and strength, our help.

Our LORD is ready. Our LORD is willing. Our LORD is able. No matter what we are facing, He is there.

Ready for Action!

by TerryLema February 2, 2021

After reading in Peter’s first letter about our “imperishable uncorrupted, and unfading [inheritance], kept in heaven for [us]” and about God’s power protecting us, I read a little further and a couple words caught my attention.  They are words that we often do not see or think about in the same context.

Peter had already talked about the trials and tribulations his readers were currently encountering and now he urges them to have their minds ready for anything else that they might have to confront.

“Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be serious and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” [1 Peter 1:13 HCSB]

Their hope, like our hope, is focused on the grace that Christ Jesus brings with Him when He returns. Grace, that marvelous gift of God that combined with mercy gives us what we do not deserve (salvation) and does not give us what we do deserve (punishment.)  The NT is clear that it is by our faith in God’s grace that we are saved and set apart for Him.

Then in the very next verse there is a word that seems at odds with grace.

“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. But as the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct.” [1 Peter 1:14-15 HCSB]

Obedience and grace are seldom seen together.  As Christians we often hold to the “just-as-I-am” principle of salvation. And while God does accept us just as we are, that does not mean we are to stay just as we were.

Upon being saved, we are to become “holy in all [our] conduct,” just as He is holy.  We are to become “obedient children.”

Let us never forget that our faith, while founded through faith in God’s grace, is to be an obedient faith.
