Go Back to the Future!

by TerryLema July 13, 2020

If we want to understand our present and our future, we need to go back. We need to symbolically get into our DeLorean, fire up our flux-capacitor and travel back to Paul’s day. We need to dive into his second letter to Timothy to understand.

“Difficult times will come in the last days.  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people!” [2 Timothy 3:1-5]

That description of our “last days” could have been taken directly from our own headlines. When the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples at that first Pentecost, it was the “beginning of the last days.” Now nearly 2000 years later, we are seeing the “last of the last days,” those perilously difficult times that Paul foretold would happen.

We are seeing these “last of the last days” in our churches also. Paul was quite clear that in these “last days” people will have a form of godliness but deny the power of God. The people in our streets are not claiming any form of godliness, they are shaking their fists at God. It is the people in our churches that claim godliness yet deny God’s power.

For too long we have tried to make our God Almighty comfortable and safe. He is neither. He is dangerous. He is Creator and Redeemer of this world, and as such, He has the only authority to determine its course. When we align ourselves through the cross with His will, we must surrender to His Ways. That is the dangerous part because His will and ours often conflict. When we come face-to-face with our LORD and Savior in all His Holiness, we know one of us needs to change, and I guarantee it will not be Him.

I cling to my dangerous God. I strive to give it all to Him. I want more than a form of godliness without power, I want true godliness with all power no matter the cost.

Separate

by TerryLema June 19, 2020

How do we go from being like the church at Pergamos, the compromising church, to the church that God intends us to be? How do we live our lives differently from the culture around us?

We cannot do it without the power of the Holy Spirit in us … and in our churches. (As Christians, we should not be living in a way that looks exactly like people who do not have the Holy Spirit living in them.) If we are going to live abundant and supernatural lives as God has called us to, then we must live those lives in the power of His Spirit. He alone can give us the power to be separate from the world. And, it is evident, that the world does notice those who live differently from them.

I remember shortly after I was saved that someone made the comment, “The Holy Spirit is a gentleman.” I was a bit baffled by that originally but came to understand that what they meant was that the Holy Spirit will only go where He is invited. He will not break down the doors of our resistance by force. He will woo, He will remind, He will lead us into godly sorrow, but He will not push His way into our hearts.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 reminds us that the “Gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full assurance.”

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is more than words. It is more than great teachings or insightful philosophies. It is alive and powerful, and used by the Holy Spirit to make us like our Savior. It is The Spirit’s assurance of not only our salvation but also of our sanctification – if we allow Him to work His work in us.

I do not want to be part of the compromising church. I do not want even one iota of compromise in me. I ask God’s Spirit to convict me, cleanse me, and make we like the One Who Died for Me! Amen & Amen.

He Set Me Free!

by TerryLema April 24, 2020

When I needed an attitude adjustment, God took me to Psalm 118, and the reminder that “This is the day the LORD has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

In order not to allow my attitude to become maladjusted again, God is having me pray through the Psalm. Today I am praying through verses 5-7: “In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.”

What is the greatest fear playing out in the world today? It is the fear of death. We are sheltered-in-place because we fear what a virus can do to us. It not only has the potential of making us sick, it has the potential to kill us. We are bombarded with that fact constantly every day. The airways are filled with the latest statistics about how many are acquiring the virus, how many are on ventilators, how many have died, where the latest outbreak has occurred. We leave our homes in trepidation and see people wearing masks, avoiding contact with others. We cannot help but be fearful.

The Psalmist reminds us however, that when we cry out to God, His answer is to set us free from that fear. He reminds us that whether we shelter-at-home or venture out He is with us. He is our helper. Paul confirms that in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

God is with us. I will add my voice to that of the psalmist, “I will not be afraid. What can man [or virus] do to me?” All my days are already numbered. When it is my time to go, via virus or some other conveyance, I will march into the presence of my God in triumph.

Father, remind us today that you are with us every moment, whether we are inside our homes or outside of them. Keep us in Your precious care. Give us that spirit of power, love, and a sound mind so that every fear is driven far from us. Amen & Amen.

Compassion & Power

by TerryLema February 17, 2020

Compassion. Merriam-Webster’s definition of compassion is “sympathetic consciousness of others distress, together with a desire to alleviate it.”

There are numerous references to Jesus’ “compassion” in the Gospels. (Here are a few: Matthew 14:14, 15:32, 20:34, Mark 1:41, 6:34, 8:2). If you take a moment to read those, you’ll notice one thing in those instances of Jesus’ compassion that is not contained in the dictionary’s definition.

Yes, Jesus did have a sympathetic consciousness of the distress of others. And He also had a desire to alleviate it. But the one thing that’s different – He took it one step further and did something about the distress of others. He fed the hungry, He healed the sick, He touched the blind eyes, He cleansed the leper.

We speak a great deal about the compassion of our wonderful Father and Savior. We share the nature and character of our God with others. That is what we should be doing. But let’s not forget that while we remind people of Christ Jesus’ compassion and love for them, that we also remind them of His power to do something about their distress.

Jesus has the power to change lives. He feeds, heals, cleanses, brings life. He sets people free from the spiritual burdens they’ve born all their lives. He releases them from bondages. He sends His Spirit to indwell them to prove God’s love for them and assure them of His presence with them—they are not alone anymore. He woos and loves them into the Kingdom of God where they are no longer slaves but sons and daughters of the King.

Yes, our God has compassion, but even more He puts power into His compassion and sends it to us to set us free from our distress.  Bless His Mighty Name. Amen & Amen.
