Path

Path

by TerryLema April 2, 2024

Yesterday I wrote about my son rebuilding a high school football program in California and a post that he wrote about being a builder or a joiner.  He ended that post with a comment about two types of parents. “There are two kinds of parents, those who prepare the path for their kids, and those that prepare their kids for the path. Which one are you?”

As I considered that question, I thought about our Father God and suddenly realized what kind of “parent” our Father God is!

That made me think about how I pray and the direction my prayers often take. I realized that I often request my Father to make the path easy – or at least easier, but my Father God is the kind of “parent” that seeks to prepare me for the path.

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” [Romans 5:3-5 NLT]

Because our God loves us dearly, He has given us the Holy Spirit. Because we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we have the ability with His guidance and help to develop all we need for the path … endurance, strength of character, confident hope of salvation.

And because our God loves us and prepares us, we can REJOICE when we run into a path that contains problems and trials.

Next Path

by TerryLema January 7, 2022

At my retirement celebration on December 28, one of the wonderful ladies of the church brought a cake. It had 11 candles gathered in one corner representing my 11 years with The Way Middleton. Close by was a 12th candle all by itself. That was to represent the new path my life is to take.

So, what do we do whenever we are standing and waiting on God to show us the next path? I sense God is calling me to deepen my faith and strengthen my relationship with Him as I wait for the that path.

I wish I could find an “Easy How-to-Guide to Deepen Your Faith.” Perhaps one that has five or ten easy steps and guarantees “Do these steps in order and increase your faith in 30-days!”  Unfortunately, God, faith, my own heart, and my relationship with Him doesn’t quite work that way.

I do know that one of the first “steps” to deepening my faith means being humble enough to believe that God knows so much more than I do. He is God, I am not. He alone can teach me about myself and about Him.

I also know that it is more than just reading my Bible or studying more. It is more than intellectual, it requires application, prayer, time, and a desire to be led (that’s where the humility comes in).

I will admit I have no idea where I am going with all this but stay tuned. I will keep you updated (smile!). I think this will be an exciting and extremely challenging journey.

(Isaiah 55:9: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”)

A little light please!

by TerryLema July 25, 2021

Part of me has always wished I could see just a little farther down the road. I do not need to know everything (although I tell myself often that I might!), but maybe just some warning about the difficulties ahead or the trials or the losses or the ….   Well, yes, I guess I do want to see a lot farther down the road and know everything.

I tell myself that is because I do not like surprises, especially the unpleasant ones. And I prefer to always be prepared and organized. I am a planner. I want things nice and tidy.

Nice and tidy, however, seldom describes life. Unruly and chaotic are often more apt descriptions. Maybe if I just knew a little more, I could keep the unruly and chaotic to a minimum.

God, however, seems to disagree with me. He does not show me what tomorrow holds. Maybe because of that passage in Matthew 6: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” [vs 34 HCSB]

My LORD, however, does light my path in other ways. He promises in that great Psalm 119 that “[His] word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” [vs105 HCSB]

As I set out each day, His Word lights the darkness in front of me. He provides assurances, promises, warnings and instruction in His Word. I know that no matter what is in front of me, He is my protection and security. And I know that whatever might try to sneak up behind me, He is there also!

Isaiah 58:8: “Your righteousness [Christ Jesus] will go before you, and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.” [HCSB]

Amen & Amen! Thank you, LORD!
