Steps

by TerryLema July 2, 2023

Last Sunday after early service at Christian Faith Center (CFC) in Caldwell I went to CFC Nampa to attend a class called First Steps. I want to be involved in ministry at Middleton after the launch and the class was required.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. It turned out to be a time when I learned more about the heart of CFC and CFC learned more about my heart. Pastor Laura was there, and we had opportunity to sit and talk a bit before and after (always a joy for me!).

I took a provided Spiritual Gifts Survey prior to the class and had an opportunity during the class to turn in a form expressing my interest in different ministries. Some of my survey scores I expected; some of my scores were a surprise. My high score was the same in four areas.

#1Exhortation. I expected that one to be high since encouragement is my motivation in everything I do. (It was prophesied over me when I was first saved and has proven to be true).

#2Teaching. I love to teach and was a much better teacher than preacher behind the pulpit.

#3Faith scored the same level. Thankfully. My life, while not easy, has been blessed. My son calls me resilient. I take that to mean that my faith has gotten stronger through many trials (count it all joy!).

The one score that startled me was that #4Mercy was on the same level as the others. I have never thought of myself as merciful. While a surprise! I have never scored high in mercy in previous spiritual gift surveys. Maybe it is because I am older or more aware of the struggles that life can present.

Whatever the reason,  I am so thankful that I reflect this trait of my Father God.

“Be merciful just as your Father also is merciful.” [Luke 6:36 HCSB]

From Generation to Generation

by TerryLema December 20, 2022

I was reading again this morning in Luke 1, focusing on Mary’s Song, “The Magnificat.”  We are probably all familiar with her opening statement, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” [vs 46-47]

Mary shows an abundant knowledge of the OT Scriptures. Her song is much like Hannah’s Song in 1 Samuel. In her song, Mary expresses God’s work in Israel, His character, His might, His care for the humble, His Holiness and His grace extended to her personally and to all of Israel.

One verse caught my attention.  “His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.”  [vs 50 NKJV]

God’s mercy isn’t unpredictable or haphazard. God’s mercy is an attribute – meaning it is what is true about Him. Just as God never changes, so His attributes remain secure in Him.

As God displayed His mercy to the people of faith who came before Mary, Mary acknowledged that God’s mercy will continue to flow out to people of faith who will come after her – or as she says, “from generation to generation.”

What God has done before God will do again. Man’s ways are changeable … God’s ways remain as true as He is, as secure as He is, as amazing as He is. Habakkuk reminded us that “God’s ways are everlasting.”  [3:6]

I think each of us one day will sing a “Mary’s Song” – one of very own that acknowledges that our souls, like hers, magnify the LORD and our spirit, like hers, rejoices in God our Savior.

Sweet Mercy!

by TerryLema January 30, 2021

Matthew 5:7: The merciful are blessed, for they will be shown mercy.  [HCSB]

That Scripture verse from the Sermon on the Mount came as a Verse of the Day to my inbox the other day.  It started me thinking about mercy and being merciful.

The word for mercy is “eleémón” and it means full of pity, merciful, compassionate. One of the word studies I checked said it is “acting consistently with the revelation of God’s covenant.”

We are shown mercy by our Father God who loved His creation so much that He sent His beloved Son to die to save it. We now, having experienced that covenant of God’s mercy are to be merciful to others.

Unfortunately, being merciful is not overflowing in modern society. We have little patience with anyone or anything that goes against our “opinions.”  We seldom give people the benefit of the doubt. The media is intent upon finding anything wrong they can dig up in the lives of others. Even our 30-minute national news outline is 29 minutes of all that is wrong everywhere, ending with 1 minutes of an “uplifting” story.

God’s people are to be different from this “present age.” We are to be merciful to others. This is also one of those “back at ya” rules in that the more merciful we are to others, the more mercy we will receive in return.

Mercy is to influence our attitudes toward all people—family, friends, enemies … and yes even politicians and broadcasters and freeway drivers! It should also drive our actions. When we are merciful, we pray, we give, we spend our time and money on others, we help, we support, we love.

Oh, Father, let us be a channel of the mercy you gave us … let it flow from Your heart to ours and then to those we meet every day. Amen.
