Light

Victorious Light!

by TerryLema October 15, 2021

The days are getting darker.  The first day of autumn was September 22. This is also known as the autumnal equinox. An equinox happens twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. The equinox is when the sun’s center crosses the equator and day and night are of equal length everywhere.

Since that first day of autumn, we have more dark in our day than we have light.  For many, that signals a seasonal affective disorder from lack of sunlight. Energy depletes and moods are less stable. Treatment usually involves adding light therapy to our days.

I actually like the change from summer to fall. I do not mind the darker winter evenings. Summer where we live with the heat and light until 11 PM at night is much harder for me to handle.

What started me thinking about light and darkness was reading John 8:12 this morning. “Then Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.’” [HCSB]

I was reminded once again that when I surrendered my life to Christ Jesus as Savior and LORD, the Spirit of God came to indwell. Now the “Light of the World” is the “light of [my] life.” I never need be in the dark again.

Our days are getting darker – literally since the autumnal equinox. And if we look at the climate of our world, we might say that our days are getting darker socially, politically, and spiritually.

No matter what is happening outside of us, inside our hearts the light of life always shines. Nothing can put it out, overcome it or diminish it. Christ is victorious over my darkness.

A little light please!

by TerryLema July 25, 2021

Part of me has always wished I could see just a little farther down the road. I do not need to know everything (although I tell myself often that I might!), but maybe just some warning about the difficulties ahead or the trials or the losses or the ….   Well, yes, I guess I do want to see a lot farther down the road and know everything.

I tell myself that is because I do not like surprises, especially the unpleasant ones. And I prefer to always be prepared and organized. I am a planner. I want things nice and tidy.

Nice and tidy, however, seldom describes life. Unruly and chaotic are often more apt descriptions. Maybe if I just knew a little more, I could keep the unruly and chaotic to a minimum.

God, however, seems to disagree with me. He does not show me what tomorrow holds. Maybe because of that passage in Matthew 6: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” [vs 34 HCSB]

My LORD, however, does light my path in other ways. He promises in that great Psalm 119 that “[His] word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” [vs105 HCSB]

As I set out each day, His Word lights the darkness in front of me. He provides assurances, promises, warnings and instruction in His Word. I know that no matter what is in front of me, He is my protection and security. And I know that whatever might try to sneak up behind me, He is there also!

Isaiah 58:8: “Your righteousness [Christ Jesus] will go before you, and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.” [HCSB]

Amen & Amen! Thank you, LORD!

His Light Shines Upon Us

by TerryLema April 30, 2020

Psalm 118: 27-29: “The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

What a beautiful way to end a difficult month. Our LORD is God. Christ Jesus has made His light shine upon us. The world around us can be a dark, scary place but our citizenship is not in the darkness, it is in the light. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” [2 Corinthians 4:6]

And if that doesn’t make your heart leap for joy, let Colossians 1:14 remind you that “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

In Idaho, our Governor is allowing churches to open their doors after May 1 in the first step of starting up our economy. I am so pleased that on May 10, we will have our first indoor church service. (Granted there are restrictions about social distancing and masks, etc.)

For many, the opening of our economy again is as if the “light” is finally breaking through our current darkness. While that may be true from the world’s perspective, in God’s perspective we broke through into the light the moment we surrendered our lives to Jesus as Savior and LORD. He took us out of the dark scary place we were in and translated us into the kingdom of His Dear Son – a kingdom of light and love and forgiveness and redemption.

What a joy Psalm 118 has been to my heart. I pray it has been to yours also. “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Amen & Amen.
