Joy & Gladness!

by TerryLema November 6, 2022

I realized that I may have been a bit negative in a few devotions lately, and I do not want to dwell in negativity. Yes, our nation (society) is shaky at times. Yes, politics have become divisive. Yes, we do have personal times of trials and adversity.

But … BUT! We are not to dwell in the negative. We are to live in joy and serve with gladness.

“The Lord reigns! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coasts and islands be glad …. Light dawns for the righteous,
gladness for the upright in heart. Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones, and praise His holy name.”
[Psalm 97:1, 11-12 HCSB]

“Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.” [Psalm 100:1 HCSB]

While the Scriptures speak of adversity and tribulation, they also speak of rejoicing, and light, and gladness, and joy. They remind us that “The LORD reigns!”

They remind us that, “Yahweh is good, and His love is eternal; His faithfulness endures through all generations.” [Psalm 100:5 HCSB]

As believers, we serve a good God whose love is eternal and whose faithfulness endures. What joy that should bring to our hearts! We, as the redeemed of the LORD (YAHWEH), alone can rejoice no matter what is going on around us (or even in us!).

The problems, the issues, the distresses of this life are limited. They will not (cannot) follow us into the presence of our Faithful, Good, Gracious, Loving, LORD! Hallelujah! Amen!

So, Today: I rejoice because You, LORD, reign! I will spend my day in rejoicing in You and serving You with gladness.

Simple Joys

by TerryLema September 27, 2022

I remember driving to church one Sunday morning and seeing an old man on one of the side streets behind the church. He was barefoot, shirtless, wearing only a pair of pants that stopped mid-calf.  He was leaning on a cane. What made me curious about him was that he was carrying a frisbee. You don’t often see old men leaning on canes carrying frisbees.

Then I noticed there was someone else in the picture … a black and white furball that came running around the corner, bouncing up and down urging the old man to throw the frisbee. Leaning on his cane, the old man reared back and threw the frisbee down the side street. With great joy, the dog sped after it. It seemed this was a familiar routine for both.  Watching them made me smile. I thought of the joy that can be found in the most simple of pleasures.

“Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing, you hold my future. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places: indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance …. You reveal the path of life to me, in your presence is abundant joy, at your right hand are eternal pleasures.” [Psalm 16:5, 11 HCSB]

Across my almost 76 years, I have experienced trials, just like most of us. Yet, despite trials, my life has been resplendent with pleasures. The greatest of these have been the simple ones, and perhaps none so great as simply experiencing the presence of the LORD amid the trials. There were times when I felt as if God had pulled me onto His great lap and hugged me, wiping away my tears and softly whispering that He was with me and always would be.

And to know that the “lines have fallen for me in pleasant places,” that God has given me salvation and a promised inheritance is the best pleasure of all.

Missing

by TerryLema July 15, 2022

I was reading Psalm 35 recently. Psalm 35 is a song of David which describes the LORD as David’s avenger against those who were against him.  Verses 21, 24-26 give a picture of David’s adversaries rejoicing over his misfortune and David’s prayer to God for relief.

“They also opened their mouth wide against me, And said, ‘Aha!’…. Vindicate me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness; And let them not rejoice over me. Let them not say in their hearts, ‘Ah, so we would have it!’ Let them not say, ‘We have swallowed him up.’ Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion who rejoice at my hurt.” [HCSB]

“Aha!” is a shout of glee over David’s hardships. David’s enemies were delighted because they thought they could rejoice over his hurt.

Recently I met someone like that, someone who rejoiced when they could point out what they thought others were doing wrong or chastise those who had a different view of theology then they did. They smiled the entire time they talked about their mission to show others incorrect.

It was not until a little after the conversation concluded that I realized that while this person was gleeful, they were missing a major component of knowing Christ Jesus – JOY! Both the OT and the NT are full of “JOY!”

Paul prayed for the Colossian believers, “May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy.” [1:11 HCSB]

David said, “You reveal the path of life to me; in Your presence is abundant joy; in Your right hand are eternal pleasures.” [Psalm 16:11 HCSB]

Nehemiah promised that “the joy of the LORD is [our] strength.”  [8:10 NKJV]

How sad to settle for glee (Aha!) in what we perceive are other’s flaws or misfortunes, instead of the abundant, strengthening JOY! that is found in knowing Christ Jesus as LORD.

After the last few chapters of Luke, this chapter awakens the soul to joy!

What must it have been like when the women went to the tomb that Sunday morning and found the stone rolled away and heard the greatest announcement? “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” [vs 5 HCSB]

Why, indeed!  Jesus was not in that tomb. The women were reminded that this was exactly what Jesus had said must happen.  Then the women … yes women … ran to the disciples to announce that Jesus was alive! “Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.” [vs 10 HCSB]

I find that most amazing. God used women to testify to the resurrection of Jesus. This was at a time when the word of women carried no weight. In Jesus’ day their testimony was even considered inadmissible in a court of law.

But no matter the gender of the messenger, it is the message which brings peace and comfort to the soul. Our LORD Christ Jesus is not in the tomb. He is Risen! And now He brings that Resurrection Life to us.

Christmas is about so much more than a simple story of a couple that could not find lodging and ended up having their baby born in a shelter for animals. Christmas without the cross would not exist. And the cross without Christmas would just be another case of capital punishment in the Roman era. Christmas and the Cross need each other.

And God’s magnificent exclamation point is the Resurrection! Without that, we would never celebrate Christmas or Easter!

Our LORD Christ Jesus, Immanuel (God with us!) came to seek and save the lost. Us. He became a helpless babe born in humble circumstances. He died on a Roman Cross and was buried. And then, rose from the grave. “Why seek the living among the dead!”

Why, indeed!

Exceeding Joy!

by TerryLema June 20, 2021

I keep coming back to the NT doxologies found in Ephesians, Jude, and Romans. The one that has been ministering to my heart during those long hours at night when I cannot sleep is the one found in Jude.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.” [Jude 24]

Last night I was focused on that little phrase “with exceeding joy.”

The word for exceeding joy is “agalliasis” and it means wild joy, ecstatic delight, exultation, exhilaration.

Our God is willing and able to keep us from stumbling in this life. We can remain steady in our Christ-like walk by the power of His Holy Spirit.

AND, our God is willing and able to present us faultless in the next life. One day we will stand in the glory of His presence … all because of God’s will, Christ’s sacrifice, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

AND, on that day, we will experience an exceeding joy, a wild, ecstatic delight unlike anything we have ever known. I do not know about you but I can hardly wait to see that day.

AND, while I wait for its appearance I can sing to “God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both Now and forever. Amen”

Even so, come quickly, LORD Jesus.

Jumpin’ for Joy!

by TerryLema February 25, 2021

At one point in Jesus’ ministry, he took 72 disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. When they completed their assignment, they came back to Jesus to report. They were extremely excited, as we all would be, that even the demons had “to submit to us in [Jesus’] name.”

Jesus’ response was that He had given them all power to trample the power of the enemy, but if they were going to rejoice it should be rejoicing that their names were written in heaven. [Luke 10:1-20]

Then Luke reports Jesus began to pray.  “At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.’” [v21]

Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, praised His Father. That Greek word for “full of joy” means “to jump for joy, be exceedingly glad, and rejoice greatly.”

What made Jesus jump for joy? His Father’s pleasure in revealing great spiritual truths to those who come to Him as little children. It was not the wise, the religious counsellors, the kings, the rulers, or the priests who saw the power of the enemy submitting to the name of Jesus, it was the common, every-day people who came to Jesus and trusted Him when He sent them out “like lambs among wolves.”  [vs 3]

Beloved, it may seem like we are “lambs among the wolves” and that the wolves have all the power, but when Jesus sends His lambs into the battlefield, He gives them all the power they need to trample the works of the enemy. And while we rejoice in that, our greatest rejoicing – our jumping for joy – comes because our names are written in heaven.

So that you became examples…

by TerryLema February 4, 2021

We finished a two-part message on choosing joy at The Way last Sunday. It was not a joy-filled experience for me, however. I had some difficult effects of my auto-immune disease Sunday morning that left me shivering and weak in my big lounge chair, huddled in a blanket, with no thoughts of standing behind a pulpit.  I called a board member and asked him to fill in, which he graciously agreed to even though he had no warning and no preparation time.

When it was almost time for song service to begin, I was feeling a bit better and decided to get dressed and head over to church. I walked in during song service and sat down to bring the second part of a joy-message. But first … first I had to address some church etiquette issues. There was nothing major, minor housekeeping types of things, but still not something on my favorites-list to do.

Finally, JOY!  One of the Scriptures in the message hit home for me.  It is from Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians.

“And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit…”  [1:6 HCSB]

Joy and Affliction – not necessarily words you find together. But for Christians, joy is found in all types of situations and circumstances. Joy and Success. Joy and Trials. Joy and Tribulations. Joy and Good Health. Joy and Chronic Disease.  You can put joy with anything we face because it is not based on anything we face … it is based on “Whose we are.” We belong to God Almighty through the work of Christ Jesus our LORD, and our joy is secure in that relationship.

But as I looked up that verse again this morning, I was reminded that there is more to it. The verse that directly follows is part of the same sentence.  “…so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.” [1:7 HCSB]

Christian Joy amid affliction not only benefits us. When we exhibit joy during trials, we provide an example to others who believe, so that they might be strengthened with joy also in their trials. God never wastes anything!

How Joyful!

by TerryLema December 15, 2020

I have been thinking more about Norman, the 7-year-old- who told Santa that he is ‘good all of the time.’ I, of course, am not a ‘norman.’ I am pretty much an ‘un-norman,’ needing the forgiveness of God repeatedly.  I am much more like the prodigal son than I am Norman. It does not take much to remind me that I am just a sinner saved by God’s amazing grace.

But as Romans 4:7 reminds me, there is much joy in being a sinner saved by God’s amazing grace. “How joyful are those whose lawless acts are forgiven and whose sins are covered!”

I am especially awestruck at this time of year when I consider the babe in the manger and what it cost God to bring that forgiveness to me.

Philippians tells us Jesus, the Word, left the glories of heaven to come to this earth, taking on our human flesh, taking on our human condition, taking on our punishment. He did it for the “joy that was set before Him.”

Now that joy is mine as I see all my sins covered by the Blood of the Lamb of God on that cross. That joy is mine knowing that I am forgiven and forgiven again. Every time I come to my Precious Savior in repentance, I know that His forgiveness will touch my sorrowing heart.

When I fail, the Father calls me to sorrow and to repent, and when I do, I am forgiven – again.

Take me into the Holy of Holies …

by TerryLema December 6, 2020

When I opened my Facebook page to post the daily devotion the other day, a memory from about five years ago appeared on my page. Sometimes these memories are pictures of fun times, birthdays, or just something silly I might have posted on my personal page.  This recent one reminded me of something far different. It read:

“Sunday we sang the song, “Take Me Into the Holy of Holies.”  I awoke this morning with the opening phrase flowing through me, ‘Take me past the outer courts ….’  I realized that I’ve been spending the last week or so in the outer courts and I need to move.  As the song says, I need to move past even the gates of praise, and past the brazen altar to the place where I see His face. I am determined to keep Christmas simple this year – simply focusing on Him … but it is so hard sometimes.  The world has a grip on the holiday season and it often is louder and stronger than my own determination!”

I was amazed as I read that memory at how much HAS NOT changed this season from that one five years ago. The world still has a grip on the holiday season, and it is still louder and stronger at times than my determination to focus solely on my LORD and Savior. Add in COVID, social distancing, isolation, and masks and this season is screaming for attention.

As I read that, however, I realized that my desire is still there to go past the outer courts—the superficial acknowledgement of Jesus’ birth, and into the Holy of Holies where I can dwell in His presence. I want to experience all that God has for me this season.

Amid the virus-and-fear pandemic, our LORD’s birth is the beacon of hope to a world that can find hope nowhere else.

“Joy to the World” is still true no matter how big a mess the world is!

The Presence of His Glory …

by TerryLema October 24, 2020

My last thoughts on Joy! for now.  I touched just a bit on it yesterday as I thought about the Joy! that will be ours when we stand in the presence of the Glory of God Almighty…that Joy! that will be ours when we see our Savior and our LORD face-to-face.

“Now to Him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of His glory, blameless and with great joy.” [Jude 1:24 HCSB]

Jude reminds us that Christ Jesus is able to protect us from stumbling. He is able to make us stand in the presence of God’s glory. He is able to make us blameless and fill us with great Joy!

As I have aged, and as I have been beset with these auto-immune diseases, I find that the danger of stumbling is much greater than it used to be. I must be ever vigilant to maintain my balance and not trip over things. I have also discovered that standing is much more a chore than it used to be! That is in the natural, governed by the rules of my body and situations.

In my spirit, however, my LORD’s protection is abundant and merciful. His Holy Spirit in me warns me, guides me, enables me to walk without stumbling and to stand firm in Him. One day He will present me blameless (not because of anything in me, but because of all He has done for me through His cross). Then my Joy! will be great and it will be complete.

How I long for that day to come! Amen & Amen!
