A Garden, A Prayer, A Choice – Holy Thursday

by TerryLema April 6, 2023

As much as the agony on the cross reaches deep into my soul, there is a passage in Luke that perhaps for me reaches even deeper. It is defined simply in my Bible translation as “The Prayer in the Garden.”

Following the last Supper, Luke tells us Jesus had to deal with a dispute among His disciples over who would be considered the greatest in the kingdom. He had to warn Peter about his coming denial and warn the others to be ready for the trouble ahead.

Then He made His way to the Mount of Olives and there in the Garden of Gethsemane He knelt to pray. He began His prayer with a request – and a decision.  “Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” [22:39-44 HCSB]

Luke uses a word translated as anguish or agony to describe Jesus at that moment. The word is agonia, which means great fear or terror of death, anxiety, agony. Matthew emphasizes that point. “Then He said to them, ‘My soul is swallowed up in sorrow —to the point of death.’” [26:38 HCSB]

Amid the anguish, even knowing what was directly ahead of Him, Jesus made a choice. He accepted the Father’s will.

From that moment, Jesus’ determination to complete what He had come to do is evident. He is in charge as He stands before His accusers. He is in charge before Pilate. Even as His body fails Him on the cross, even as He suffers pain beyond measure … He forgives the soldiers, He takes care of His mother’s future, He gives the promise of salvation to the thief hanging next to Him and He declares to all that the question of salvation is “FINISHED!” forever.

Maundy Thursday

by TerryLema April 1, 2021

So many events in the life of Jesus on the Thursday of Holy Week.  They begin in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 18. We see the Last Supper, the Agony in Gethsemane, the Betrayal and Arrest, and Jesus’ first trial before the Jewish Authorities.

For me, the significance is always Gethsemane. It was there Jesus saw and experienced in His Spirit the things that were about to unfold. They were so horrifying that He could have died right there in the garden.

He expressed His pain in Matthew 26:38:  He said to his disciples when He asked them to pray and watch with Him, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow—to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with Me.” [HCSB]

Luke confirms the agony Jesus endured. “Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. Being in anguish, He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.” [vs 43-44 HCSB]

It was at Gethsemane He asked the Father if there could be any other way. And, it was there that He fully surrendered His will to the Father’s.

From the moment Jesus surrendered His will to the Father’s, He never wavered. Through the betrayal, trials, torture, rejection, and crucifixion He was completely in control. He could have called angels to deliver Him from all of it, but He did not.

Jesus willingly fulfilled what the Father asked of Him. Because He did, we now have entry into the very Presence of God.

Thank you, sweet Jesus, for your obedience. Amen.

Gethsemane

by TerryLema April 9, 2020

It was late at night. The Passover meal was done. Judas had left the group to finalize handing Jesus over to those seeking His death.

“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’“ [Matt 26:36-38 NIV]

We know the disciples didn’t keep watch; they fell asleep. Jesus was left alone to agonize over what was just ahead of Him. It was such a deep sorrow that as He contemplated that awful cup He would have to drink, he sweated great drops of bloody sweat. He had to be strengthened by angels sent from the Father just to keep praying.

“Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” [Luke 22:43-44 NKJV]

You have probably heard me say this before. This was the deciding moment for all time. When Jesus arose from His prayer in the Garden, His decision was made. He never wavered from that point on. He was determined to complete the work. He was in full control through the trials, the torture, the bloody cross.

When I read of the crucifixion I see my sin, but I think I see my sin and what it cost God’s Son to die for me even more in these moments before the cross as Jesus suffered in the Garden. Even the anticipation of the dregs of that cup of sin and perversions was abhorrent to the Son of God. And yet, because of His love for us, He made the choice to endure it all for the joy (for us) that was set before Him.

Oh, Jesus, Savior of my soul, forgive me. Never let me take for granted all you have done for me. Let me live my life to bring honor to your name. Give me opportunity to share Your amazing love with others so that they might also know you. Amen & Amen.
