Most every Christian is familiar with the Great Commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20. Following His Resurrection, he left His disciples (and all those who would believe in Him) two great truths and a great commission.
“Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” [NLT]
The two great truths are that Jesus has been given “all authority in heaven and on earth,” and that He is “with you always, even to the end of the age.”
All Authority. Not just a bit of it, or a portion of authority, or a limited authority, but ALL authority. The Greek word for authority is exousia, and it encompasses authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength. We need never worry that the One we love and serve is subject to any higher power.
And not only do we serve the one with ALL Authority, but He has promised to be with us “always.” We will never experience a moment when the Lord Christ Jesus is not with us. We are never alone!
Tomorrow: Our Part of the Great Commission
