Prayer

by TerryLema

I love Thursdays. Seems an odd day of the week to rejoice in. Most of us look forward to the weekend. However, Thursday is the day designated by my church as a day to gather at 9 AM for community prayer.

I find several odd things about Thursdays. First, I have a difficult time sleeping and most of the time pain will wake me up between 4 and 5 AM. Not on Thursdays, however. On Thursdays I often wake up late. (Seems someone or something doesn’t want me to make it to prayer.) I now set my alarm.

Another oddity about Thursdays. I can go all week long without interruptions to my schedule, but Thursdays are often full of them.

One more oddity about Thursdays. There are only a few of us gathering to pray. I am amazed – but resigned – that more people don’t take the divine opportunity to pray alongside others.

I understand that we are a busy people. But Jesus was busy also. Luke 5 reports that as people learned about the miracles happening through Him, they began to pursue Him. His response was to withdraw to pray.

“…the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases. But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” [vs 15-16 NLT]

If Jesus took time from His “busy schedule” to prayer, how much more ….
