From What? (Part One)

by TerryLema

Have you noticed that you could become so familiar with a Scripture verse that you lose sense of the depth of its meaning? You’ve read it countless times, underlined it in your Bible, heard numerous sermons on it, quoted it to many others, and had others quote it back to you. Now it seems like a leaf carried along by the wind; it breezes right by with hardly any notice.

In my morning devotions recently, I came across such a Scripture. “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” [John 8:31-32 NLT]

I read it and then went on … until the Holy Spirit urged me to return and read it again. And again. Then I heard … “the truth will set you free … from what?” Do I truly recognize all those things from which the truth has set me free?

Later in that chapter Jesus will highlight that we are set free from sin, free from sin’s condemnation, guilt, shame, and death.

And since sin touches all parts of our life – our thoughts, desires, words, and actions – we are set free from sin’s influence in those areas. We are free from fear, anxiety, terror, hopelessness, discouragement, impatience, confusion, hatred, bitterness – in other words, we are set free from whatever sin has produced in our life.

The truth WILL set you FREE! Amen&Amen
