When I was a child, I learned the answers to questions found in the old Baltimore Catechism. The only one I remember is the question, “Why did God make you?”
The answer to that Catechism question is, “God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in the next.”
Other answers to that question include the idea that God created us “for His pleasure.”
Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, our LORD and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Colossians 1:16 adds: “All things were created by him and for him.”
Being created for God’s pleasure does not mean we were created for His amusement or as entertainment. We were not created because He needed companionship or friendship. God does not NEED anything. But God is a Creator, and creators LOVE to create. They take great JOY in the things they create.
I remember when my babies were born. I remember the great joy they gave me as they grew. I remember celebrating each stage of life with them (and yes, even when they were teenagers). They still bring me pleasure, just spending time with them and loving and giving love.
Why did God make me (and you)? To know, love, serve Him and for His pleasure. Amazing.
