Holy, Holy, Holy

by TerryLema March 20, 2023

We are all familiar with Isaiah’s reaction to the presence of the LORD in Chapter 6. While the Seraphim announced that God is “Holy, Holy, Holy,” Isaiah recognized his own lack of holiness, “Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips.” [vs 3, 5 HCSB]

Over and over and over in Scripture we are told that God is holy and that we are to be “holy” because He is holy. We are also told that God hates sin. “For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil cannot dwell with You.” [Psalm 5:4 HCSB]

God hates sin because it is the very opposite of His Holy nature. His Holiness is the core of His nature. God also hates sin because He knows that it separates us from Him. He knows what sin can and does do. I think, however, there are times when Christians are cavalier about sin. We may not fully comprehend the depth of God’s hatred of it.

We must never miscalculate the power and the seriousness of sin. We must never underestimate what sin will do when it gets a foothold in our life. It will leave us wretched. And as it progresses, destruction follows in its wake.

“Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” [James 1:15 HCSB]

There is no such thing as a “small” or “insignificant” sin. Sin never remains static. It grows and will eventually ruin. That is why it is imperative we take care of sin when it is first conceived.

Thankfully, God has made the way (Christ Jesus’ cross and resurrection) for us to do that.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9 HCSB]

Happy Birthday!

by TerryLema March 19, 2023

Happy Birthday Bob! My husband turns 83 today. My favorite term for him is “Old Man,” but then I began using that term when he turned 30, while I was still a youngster at 23!

He walked into my life when I was 13. Arrayed in his Marine Dress Blue uniform he had come to take his then-fiancé to her high school graduation. I was babysitting her two little brothers. He never married her, getting one of those “Dear Bob” letters when he was overseas.

After coming back to California, his ex-fiancé’s mother pointed him my way. That was mid-August 1966. On September 9, he asked me to marry him, and we were married in April 1967.

I always joke that “it is only the grace of God that can keep you married when you are married to the wrong man!”

That is a joke, but it is also true. We are nothing alike! He’s outdoorsy, I’d rather be inside. He likes to hunt and fish; I’d rather read and crochet. He hates being “upfront,” and that is where I have spent a lot of my life. We are just very different people. (The one thing we do well together is love our kids and grandkids, our friends, and our church family.)

It is no joke, however, that the grace of God has kept us together for almost 56 years. It is no joke that God’s grace has brought us through many difficulties, trials, hard times and even good times. His grace has been and still is the glue that keeps us going. We have seen “for better and worse,” and “richer and poorer” many times. Now we live in the “sickness and health” part of life. And still, it is His grace.

But, oh man as I think back, that “Old Man” sure did look good in his Marine Dress Blues!

Whatever You Ask

by TerryLema March 18, 2023

As Jesus was preparing His disciples in John 15 for His separation from them by calling them His friends – not servants – He reminded them of something very special.

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” [John 15:16 HCSB]

Our friendship with the Father through Christ Jesus, His Son, was not one of our choosing. We are God’s friends because He chose us to be so. He also chose us for a purpose, to go out into this world and bear fruit that remains.

I often hear people quote the last part of verse 16, “whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.”

When they quote that verse, it is not always in the context in which it was spoken. It is sometimes quoted in a very selfish way … that God will give or do whatever they want if they ask for it by using “Jesus’ Name.”  They quote it as if God is some dispensing machine in the heavens – put in the “Jesus’ Name” token and take out whatever you want.

The context, however, is different. The context is that God chose us to be His friends that we might go into this world and produce fruit that lasts.

Fruit that lasts is fruit that is eternal. It is produced through sacrifice and good works. It is born in the lives of others, not something we selfishly claim for our own greedy needs. It is not that new car or more money or a bigger house, it is patience with the unlovely, compassion for the hurting, love for the lost.

That is fruit that remains … it remains all the way into and throughout eternity. That is the fruit that is always ours when we ask and seek it in “Jesus’ Name.”

I Repeat Myself

by TerryLema March 17, 2023

When I sit with my laptop and prepare to write a devotion, I usually try to quiet my soul and listen to what the LORD might say to me. Sometimes I will read something that day or a few days before that will ruminate in my soul and find its way into my writing.

Often I think to myself, I’ve said that before! I have been writing devotions off and on since the early 1990s. I have repeated myself often! That is okay, however, since we are commanded to repeat the things of the LORD.

Moses reminded the nation of Israel in Deuteronomy 6 of the greatest commandment. “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.” [vs 5 HCSB]

Then Moses told the nation they were to repeat this command and the statutes and ordinances God had given them.

“These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” [vs 6-9 HCSB]

Repeat. The NKJ says, “teach them diligently.” The word comes from a root that means to whet or sharpen, as to sharpen a sword or arrow.

To repeat, or teach diligently, the things of the LORD God will sharpen our souls (our mind, will and emotions) so that they align with and conform to God’s desires and commands for His children.

Every Step

by TerryLema March 16, 2023

The last two days I have been thinking more about the message Pastor Laura brought on Sunday from 1 Kings 18, the story of Elijah on Mt. Carmel. The first thing I noted was God’s perfect timing; the second thing was that when God speaks our obedience is to be immediate.

The third thing was from verse 19. It was part of Elijah’s instruction to King Ahab. “Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.” [HCSB]

Pastor Laura reminded us that this was not a walk in the park. This was a long trek up a mountain. And as the Scripture notes, the summons was to “all Israel,” not to just a few people.

It had not rained for three years. The trail would have been dry, perhaps dusty. Some sections were probably hardened like concrete. Every step up that dry mountain would have been a chore.

And only Elijah knew that God had promised rain.

Did you ever think about that? The King, the nation of Israel, all the false prophets and Elijah trudged up that dry mountainous trail together, but only one man, Elijah, did it with hope and a promise in his heart.

Elijah knew that God always fulfilled His promises. He had been experiencing that for the past three years.

Elijah may not have known exactly how God would do it, but he knew rain was promised and rain there would be.

God Spoke

by TerryLema March 15, 2023

Last Sunday at The Way, Pastor Laura brought a message out of 1 Kings 18. That is the chapter that tells the story of Elijah’s confrontation on Mt. Carmel.  As she was speaking, God drove a few points deep into my heart. Yesterday, I wrote of the first one – God’s perfect timing.

The second thing that really registered with me on a morning when I was grumpy and out-of-sorts from the time change was “emotions did not matter. God spoke. Elijah obeyed.” She also noted that partial obedience is essentially non-obedience.

“’Go and present yourself to Ahab. I will send rain on the surface of the land.’ So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.” [1Kings 18:1-2 HCSB]

The Scriptures have a lot to say about obedience. As I thought more about obedience, I remembered two events with Jesus in the New Testaments.

Mark 1:27: Jesus rebuked an unclean spirit in a man, and it immediately left the man. The reaction of those around him was instant. “He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him!”

Mark 4:41: The disciples were in a boat in a storm while Jesus slept. When out of fear they woke Him, He commanded the wind and rain to cease, which they immediately did. The disciples’ reaction was terror, “Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Isn’t it interesting that unclean spirits and the natural world obey immediately when God speaks, but men and women often debate with God hoping to change His mind?

God spoke to Elijah, “so Elijah went ….” When God speaks to us, He expects us to obey. That is a decision of our wills, not our emotions.

They Really Do!

by TerryLema March 14, 2023

I had one of those days last Sunday.  We had just rolled over to Daylight Saving Time. I had my annual rant about how I hate time changes. It was, of course, a Sunday, so I went to church after one fitful night where I dreamed about trying to set clocks ahead and about how awful I would feel all day with less sleep. One of those days, right?

God, however, had more for my day than just my annual grumpy. Instead, He spoke to me several times as I listened to the message Pastor Laura brought. It was from 1 Kings 18, about Elijah being told by God to go to King Ahab and gather all Israel to Mt. Carmel—that included the prophets of the false gods Baal and Asherah.

Three things touched my soul profoundly. The first was that God’s timing is perfect—even when it comes through difficulty.

God opened my heart and mind to show me His perfect timing. I thought I would pastor The Way for many more years. I was walking three miles a day, had tons of energy even at 72. In fact, someone in the congregation called me the “Energizer Bunny.” Then in a matter of weeks that changed, and two auto-immune diseases struck. Fatigue and pain became a constant companion.

At the same time, God was calling Pastor Laura to be a senior pastor.

As I look back, God’s timing was perfect. I do not know if the transition to Christian Faith Center (CFC) Middleton would ever have happened had it not been for my getting out of the way and Pastor Laura stepping in. I do not know if we would ever have had the opportunity to reach the lost of Middleton like we will now, except for having CFC adopt us.

This was decidedly one of those Romans 8:28 times. “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” [Romans 8:28 HCSB]

We Do Love! We Do Grace!

by TerryLema March 13, 2023

I have been pondering a bit on my church being adopted by Christian Faith Center (CFC). We will be changing our name from The Way Middleton to CFC Middleton. We will be transitioning over the next months.

Don’t you like that word transition? It is a less threatening way of saying “change.” We all know what most think of “change.” We will be changing, however, and that is both threatening and exciting.

CFC is a big, modern, growing church. The Way is small and not very modern. We will be adopting much of CFC’s outlook, philosophy, and vision. At first glance, it seems that we have nothing to really offer, except for a building in a city where commercial buildings are scarce.  But I wonder if that is true.

Yes, we have a building. But we have much more than that. There is a plaque in the foyer of the church which expresses what we really have to offer. It reminds me every time that I walk through those doors that we are much more than a building … we are a church that is truly family—a family that loves, that does hugs, that gives grace to all.

A new attendee at The Way told me recently, I have never felt such love as when I walked through the doors of this church. Then she said, “I hope that doesn’t change after we become part of CFC.”

The Way has always sought to give God’s greatest treasure (His grace) to the least deserving—which is every one of us. I trust that will be the heart of CFC Middleton too. We can relinquish all that temporal, external stuff in the change, but we must keep a strong grip on the heart of a family that loves, hugs, and gives grace to all.

“By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” [John 13:35 HCSB]

Pardoned!

by TerryLema March 12, 2023

Last Saturday after watching golf and listening to the evening news (yes I watch golf and even have a favorite golfer), Bob and I watched an old Gaither video, Let Freedom Ring. It was recorded at Carnegie Hall not too long after the 9/11 attack.

The last song on that recording is “Let Freedom Ring,” sung by the then Gaither Vocal Band. I love the song and I love that rendition. There is one line in that song that always digs down deep into my heart. “When my Lord bought freedom with the blood of His redemption, His cross stamped pardon on my very soul.”

My soul has an official stamp. “Pardoned!”

Pardoned means the excusing of an offense without exacting a penalty, and the release from the legal penalties of an offense.”

Christ Jesus took my sin, my shame, my guilt, and my punishment on that cross. He paid all my debts that I owed from my sinful ways to a Holy God. He set me free. Then with His blood that flowed down that cross, He stamped my very soul so that throughout this life and into eternity, I bear that marvelous proclamation “Pardoned!”

“In [Christ Jesus] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” [Ephesians 1:7 NKJV]

All because of God’s great mercy and the riches of His grace! Hallelujah!

“PARDONED!”

Yuck!

by TerryLema March 11, 2023

It is that time of year again. This is what I call “Yuck Saturday.” It is the day we have to turn our clocks for Daylight Saving Time. We lose an hour of sleep tonight. I will be out of sorts tomorrow because I have one of those internal clocks that can time my response to something in my oven down to less than 60 seconds.

It will take me nearly a month to readjust to the time. And since I am a morning person, who goes to bed by 9 PM, flipping that clock ahead one hour puts the sunshine where I do not want it and takes it away from where I do (the morning).

And to be honest, how does adjusting a clock on the wall save daylight? We will get the same hours and minutes of daylight whatever the clock says! I wish they would pick a time and leave it. Eventually I will get used to it.

Now that I have had my yearly tirade … I admit that resetting those clocks to spring forward and fall back remind me about our future found in Revelation 20.

One day we will live in that eternal city. That “city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” [vs 23 HCSB]

Those who will abide in that eternal light are “only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” [vs 27]

Got your name written?
