Promises Kept

by TerryLema September 14, 2023

The great promises we hold to will only be as great as the God in whom we believe.

Paul tells us in his first letter to the Corinthians that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

He adds that while no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God, God has given us His Spirit to indwell us so that we may understand what God has freely given us. [1 Corinthians 2]

People make promises all the time … we’re in the middle of a political run for the presidency.  Promises abound.  Everyone has a promise … few of which will be kept.  By their very nature promises are based on the power and character of those making them.  Circumstances intervene. Situations evolve.  People change their minds.  And just like that the promises we’ve trusted are set aside by the very people who gave them to us.

Unfortunately, we can become a bit jaded because of so many un-kept promises.  We trust no one.  We believe nothing we read, and little of what we see and hear.  We might even carry that attitude into our relationship with God.  We apply the same doubt to the promises of God that we apply to the promises of man.

But God is not man that He should lie.  In fact, God cannot lie. And there are no circumstances, or situations that are powerful enough to overcome or tilt the slightest bit what God has promised.  God will not change His mind, He changes not.  The great promises that we hold to are every bit as great as the God in whom we believe!

What We Already Have

by TerryLema September 13, 2023

Peter begins his second letter telling us that God has given us “everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” [2 Peter 1:2]

That word for godliness is EUSEBEIA (yoo-seb’-i-ah); which simply means godliness or holiness. God has provided everything we need to live a holy life, a godly life.  Everything.  It’s all there.  Waiting … waiting for us to appropriate it.

I remember a story about John D. Rockefeller.  He saw a painting in a catalog that he really liked and wanted. He sent his assistants scouring the world to see who possessed it so that he could acquire it.  They found it in his own collection.  He possessed it all along and didn’t even know it.

Are we like that with the things of God?  Are we scouring around trying to find things we already possess?  God has given us everything.  That means He has held back nothing.  Do we need peace, comfort, strength, joy?  It’s already ours.  Do we need forgiveness, wisdom, provision, grace?  We have it.

Peter ends his letter with one important admonition that we are to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”  [2 Peter 3:18]

Why the reminder to GROW in knowledge?  Because everything we need for life and godliness is given us THROUGH the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The more we know of Jesus, the more we realize just what is in our storehouse.  We won’t be scurrying around trying to find something we already possess.  We’ll know what we have, and we’ll know how to appropriate and appreciate it!

What Joy Shall Fill My Heart!

by TerryLema September 12, 2023

The phrase, “what joy shall fill my heart” was running through my mind this morning and then I recognized where it comes from.  It is found in the final verse in a beloved old hymn, How Great Thou Art.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.  Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Have we lost some of our admiration of the greatness of our God?  Do we fail to see our God displayed in the universe, in the stars or rolling thunder as the song says?  Do we not hear Him any longer in the song of the birds or the rushing brooks or feel Him on the breezes? Have we become so jaded that we are no longer rendered breathless when we think about the cross?

There is another verse to that song that should leave us speechless with awe, overpowered by God’s abundant mercy and grace.

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

We must return to the greatness of God. We must come back to the cross where God’s Son was not spared.  We must be struck again by God’s majesty.  We must see ourselves in the light of God’s holiness.  We can no longer see our God the way the world sees Him, we must see Him as He is.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art!

Whirling and Rejoicing!

by TerryLema September 11, 2023

There is a delightful passage at the end of the book of Philippians, two paragraphs (4:4-7).  One begins this way … “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

That passage begins with rejoicing and ends with the peace of God guarding our hearts and minds.

Rejoicing! The Greek word in the New Testament is CHAIRO, which means to be glad, calmly happy, and joyful. The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for rejoice is ‘ALATS and it means to spin or jump for joy.

In 2 Samuel 6, David was bringing the Ark of the Covenant down from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David.  It says he DANCED before the Lord, and it uses a Hebrew word, KARAR, which means to whirl.  David was leaping, spinning, and whirling in dance.  He was rejoicing.  The Old Testament way.  I like that.

We are to rejoice always in the Lord.  Paul tells us that twice.  We can be New Testament rejoicers — glad, calmly happy, and full of joy.  That will please God abundantly.  That will result in the peace of God abiding in our hearts and minds.

We can be Old Testament rejoicers – spinning, dancing, and whirling!  That will please God abundantly and bear the same results.

Personally, I want to be like David before the ark.  Unfortunately, my body is no longer conducive to leaping, dancing, and whirling, but while I cannot leap, dance or whirl with my body, I can certainly do it with my heart!

Let us Rejoice in the Lord always!

Rounding the Corner

by TerryLema September 10, 2023

September is probably my favorite month. September always feels like we are rounding the corner to my favorite time of year. It can still be warm, but it guarantees cooler times ahead. It promises the aroma of fallen leaves and trees of brilliant colors. It reminds that the holiday season is on its way. I think I could live forever in September.

I know we are still a couple weeks away from the official start of autumn, but something about September also reminds me to be thankful.  In September I always seem to re-start a season of thankfulness.  From here to the end of the year, my mind consistently returns to one passage of Scripture. “Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  [1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 HCSB]

God’s will for us is that we are joyful always, praying continually, and giving thanks – no matter the circumstances.

No one ever said God’s will for us is easy, but He did tell us that His burden is light.  And nothing lightens our burdens like being joyful in the Spirit amid them.  Nothing makes us stronger than having ready prayer flowing forth.  And nothing makes us better able to persevere or endure those circumstances that are difficult than a constant offering of thanksgiving from a heart that has been captured by God’s grace.

This, of course, should be our attitude all year long.  I know I set out to make it so.  Yet when September comes, there seems to be a refreshing of my spirit that arrives with a renewed commitment to be joyful always, praying continually, and giving thanks to my Lord and Savior.

To See Answered Prayer

by TerryLema September 9, 2023

I was sitting in my rocker last Friday evening, September 1. I was reading and half watching the college football game between Louisville and Georgia Tech. I was not in the best of moods. I was tired. Probably a bit grumpy. Certainly fatigued, as I am every evening as 9 PM approaches. And then I noticed a text message from some of The Way gang had hit my phone a bit earlier.

They had gone over to the Christian Faith Center (CFC) Middleton campus and had taken pictures of the progress in the children’s church building. They also took pictures of the flags and signage and billboards waiting in the lobby for the upcoming launch.

As I looked at those pictures, I was overwhelmed by the goodness of God. Everything prayed for was becoming reality. And God was allowing me to see it happen.

All those prayers we prayed to reach Middleton with the Gospel of Christ Jesus were not in vain. The desire for an Espanol service in that building was about to happen in just a couple of days. A building FULL of people who love God was unfolding before our eyes. A building FULL of children learning about their Savior was taking shape and would soon be FULL of the sounds of laughter and love.

When David wanted to build a temple for the LORD, he was told by God that he would not be the one to do so, but his son would. David bowed down in thanksgiving before God. You can read his prayer in 2Samuel 7:18-29.

I felt a little like David. I prayed for God’s house in Middleton. I was not the one to build it, but God is so graciously allowing me to see it happen.

“Now, please bless Your servant’s house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord God, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant’s house will be blessed forever.” [vs29 HCSB]

Finish With Joy!

by TerryLema September 8, 2023

Paul was on his way to Rome. He had appealed to Caesar. When the ship stopped in Miletus, he sent for the Ephesians elders. When they arrived, he told them that he would never see them again. He warned them that they would face hardships and attacks. He also committed them to God’s protection and grace. Finally, at the end, they knelt, wept, and prayed together.

As I was reading that in Acts 20, I was drawn to verse 24.

“But none of these things (the chains and afflictions that awaited him) move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” [Acts 20:24 NKJV]

It was that one phrase “that I may finish my race with joy” that called to me. Those two little words “with joy” are found in some manuscripts; in others they are not. But I think they were found in Paul’s heart.

Paul was looking to the end of his race, to finishing the ministry given to him by God on the Damascus Road. He had lived his life testifying about the Gospel of the grace of God found in Christ Jesus his LORD and Savior.

Despite the hardships he had faced along the way, despite the chains and afflictions that awaited him in the not-so-distant future, when that race ended, I am sure Paul knew it would end “with joy.”

Beloved, when our race ends and we see our Savior’s face, I cannot imagine it will be anything but “with joy!”

Pain, No More!

by TerryLema September 7, 2023

Pain is a given in this life. It is liberally spread across the human race. It comes in many forms, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. It can be acute or chronic. It can have a wide range of intensity (from not much to the worst pain ever experienced).

I was thinking about pain at this moment because I had a rough day yesterday dealing with it. At one point, I tried to remember the last time I was truly pain free. All I could remember was that it was “a while ago.”

There are two things I know about pain. I know its origin, and I know its end.

Pain originated in the Garden of Eden. When Eve bit down on the lie of the enemy and Adam followed, sin entered. And with sin, pain. And with sin, death.

In Genesis 3, God told Adam and Eve about the consequences of their sin. Eve and all who would come after her, would experience pain in childbirth, while Adam and all who came after him would have “painful labor” in providing what was needed to survive.

But as we can pinpoint pain’s origin, we also have the promise of pain’s end. It comes when Jesus returns and this world becomes His.

“[God] will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away.” [Revelation 21:4 HCSB]

I may have days of pain here … but oh glory! I won’t have a single moment of pain there. Even so, come quickly LORD Jesus!

3 AM Musings

by TerryLema September 6, 2023

It is 3 AM and I am wide awake in my bed. I just woke up from a crazy dream about buying a lift ticket in another town with a friend, but the friend disappeared, and I missed the lift. At the same time part of the song “I Speak Jesus” was running through my mind. I was also in the middle of a hot flash. Strange night.

As the hot flash dissipated, I realized I was in one of those early morning sweet spots – one of those times when I had no pain. I knew that if I moved or got out of bed that sweet spot would disappear, so I just stayed right where I was.

I began to think about what might be causing my extreme fatigue – but that is a fruitless search. There are so many things, and the doctors just can’t quite nail down the cause (or causes as there could be many contributing to it). Then I began to think about the wonderful blessing God gave me recently in seeing the Espanol church come to life in CFC Middleton.

Suddenly, I was overwhelmed by how much God loves me.  I could not help but wonder why? I am nothing special.  A little girl from Pennsylvania, raised in a dysfunctional family. A rebellious teenager. A woman headed into overwhelming dysfunction also until Jesus intersected my life.

Why God would want me is beyond comprehension. Why He would love me as He does is beyond amazing. Why He would answer prayers, give me desires, and then fulfill them – and allow me to see them fulfilled – is so abundantly glorious I have few words to express how I feel.  I silently wept as I thought about those things.

Everything I am and everything I have is from Him. God loves me. And the glorious thing is that He loves you the same way!

“For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive?” [1 Corinthians 4:7 HCSB]

Meanwhile, We Groan

by TerryLema September 5, 2023

I was reading in Ecclesiastes yesterday.  The book opens with “’Vanity of vanities,’ says the Preacher; ‘Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’”

The Preacher was Solomon, the richest of all kings who had everything and anything a person could want.  And when he looked it all over, when he experienced everything possible, to him it was all vanity, a thought which he repeats through the book.

Vanity, hebel, means emptiness, transitory and unsatisfactory.

There is one thought, however, that always intrigues me in Solomon’s discourse on vanity. It comes in Chapter 3:11, when Solomon says that God has set eternity in the hearts of men.

Paul also talks about that heartfelt longing for eternity. “For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands. Indeed, we groan in this body, desiring to put on our dwelling from heaven.” [2 Cor 5:1-2 HCSB]

Meanwhile we groan.  Boy, do we groan.  We groan when we face separations.  We groan when we face sin and its consequences.  We groan when we grow tired or sick or old or lonely or unsatisfied.  We groan, longing for heaven [our home], for the presence of God [our Father], and for our loved ones there.

God has placed a longing in our hearts for heaven (eternity) that cannot be filled by anything in this life.  There is something inside us that knows that our life in this world is not complete, not enough.

Deep within all of us is a knowledge that this is not our home.
