Want My Jump Back!

by TerryLema June 30, 2023

There are many things that I want to do but cannot do anymore because of aging and health issues. Some are trivial, some are important. But probably the one thing I really want to do again is jump! Oh, I don’t mean that I want to play hopscotch or jump rope with the little girls next door (although that would be fun!). I mean I want to dance and leap in worship again!

I have been watching videos of the new songs I am learning. When I see Charity Gayle jumping for joy as she sings “Echo (In Jesus’ Name),” or I watch Phil Wickham dance when he sings about the joy in the “House of the LORD,” I want to join them. Unfortunately, I lost my jump a decade ago.

I want to dance and leap as David danced and leaped.  “David was dancing with all his might before the Lord wearing a linen ephod….King David leaping and dancing before the Lord.” [2 Samuel 6:14-16 HCSB]

David’s wife was ashamed of him for his exuberance before the LORD. I am sure there are those today who think being exuberant in worship is excessive – BUT I LOVE IT! I want to see our young people so full of the joy of the LORD that they are dancing and leaping as David did before the LORD.

And I am promised that one day when the Redeemed of the LORD return to God, I will have my jump back. Because then “the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy, for water will gush in the wilderness, and streams in the desert….” [Isaiah 35:6 HCSB]

For now, I will have to settle for leaping for joy in my heart!

Annual Visit

by TerryLema June 29, 2023

I had my annual Medicare physical recently combined with my regular diabetic check-up. I got my lab work done ahead of time so we could discuss the results. As with all doctor visits, especially as I age and battle a couple auto-immune diseases, there can be good news and not-so-good news. That was the case this time.

I have been a diabetic type 2 since 1998. I have kept my diabetes under control most of that time. My labs show that I am right where I should be (good news) and that my kidneys are normal (that is great news). All in all, I am in pretty good shape for the shape I am in.

Only one bit of not-so-good news, my feet are “buzzing inside,” which means I am developing some peripheral neuropathy. My doctor gave me the option of treating the symptoms with medication, since at present medicine has not found a way to fix the underlying condition. I declined since it is just an annoyance now and I do not want another medication.

Too often in life, we opt to fix the symptoms instead of diving into the underlying cause. That may work with our physical condition, but it certainly does not with our spiritual one.

When it comes to our hearts, we need to get to the heart of the matter and not just opt to treat the symptoms of our spiritual ill health. We need to recognize we need God to create in us a new heart (since we cannot do that ourselves. Thankfully, He has made the way through His Son’s sacrifice on the cross. And He has given us the most precious promise …

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” [Ezekiel 36:26 HCSB]

Nothing of Importance Has Changed!

by TerryLema June 28, 2023

I went by the old “The Way” property the other day. It has certainly changed in appearance. The paint is a different color, concrete has been poured around it. The old sign (that I hated) is gone. There are concrete planters in front that will soon be filled with shrubbery. It is still a work in progress, but there is the beginning of a new design around the building (and one going on inside that I hope to see soon).

It is becoming Christian Faith Center (CFC) Middleton and will soon bear that name on the outside.

I realize some will love the new design and some will want to return to the old, but as I thought about it, God reminded me of something that we need to keep in mind. The building may be getting a face-lift and becoming something a bit different than what it was, but the message that will flow through it is the same Good News that has always been preached there. That is not changing.

I always determined to preach the Gospel at The Way – the Good News of God’s salvation for all. I was determined to preach truth, from the Scriptures, not my own opinion. (I probably failed at times, but hopefully succeeded far more often). After spending months now listening to the messages at CFC, I see that same determination to be faithful to the true Word of God.

“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight.” [Romans 1:16 NLT]

That old building may be changing in appearance, those who meet there may know it by a different name, but, BUT, the Good News that will be proclaimed there is the same Good News about Christ Jesus that has always been proclaimed! Nothing of importance has changed.  Hallelujah.

The Love Paradox

by TerryLema June 27, 2023

I post a quote daily on my personal Facebook page called “JoyBook.” Sometime the quote is comical (“Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.” Yogi Berra). Other times the quote is more serious.

Recently I posted one that really made me think. “Here’s the paradox. We can fully embrace God’s love only when we recognize how completely unworthy of it we are.”  [Ann Tatlock]

Paul wrote. “This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’—and I am the worst of them.” [1 Timothy 1:15 HCSB]

I am a lawbreaker. I have failed to keep the first and greatest commandment—to love God with all my heart and soul. I have gone astray. I have rebelled against God’s laws. I have tried to run as far away from God as possible.

I may not have persecuted the church, as Paul did, but I am a lawbreaker nonetheless. My sins are many and have dotted my life with stains that nothing I tried would wash away.

BUT GOD.  But God loved me. And because of His great love shown through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, my status was changed in 1973 from lawbreaker to child of God. My stains were covered with the precious blood of Jesus. I now strive each day to keep as near to my Father as I can.

I deserve none of God’s love. I am completely unworthy of it. AND YET. Still. He loves. Me. You.

As difficult (and as glorious) as that is to fully embrace, embrace it we must.

He Touched Him

by TerryLema June 26, 2023

Research has shown that it takes 8-10 meaningful touches each day to maintain physical and emotional health. Studies show that touching someone signals both safety and trust. For me, I didn’t mind the masks as much as I missed hugs during the pandemic when we were told to “maintain a 6-foot distance” from everyone.

Mark’s Gospel begins with a roar! Mark does not bother with genealogies; he dives right in with John the Baptizer and the Baptism and following Temptation of Jesus.

Then Mark goes on to ministry. Jesus calls disciples, drives out unclean spirits, heals and preaches. But just 40 verses in, Jesus does something so wonderful. Approached by a man described as having a serious skin disease (probably leprosy), the man falls on his knees and begs Jesus to “make me clean.”

“Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched him. ‘I am willing,’ He told him. ‘Be made clean.’  Immediately the disease left him, and he was healed.” [vs 41-42 HCSB]

Jesus touched a man who was untouchable. Lepers were required to announce their disease and warn people to “maintain a distance” from them. I often wonder how long it had been since this man had experienced a loving healing touch.

When Jesus touched him, it signaled safety and trust. There is no more meaningful touch than that given by the One Who is the Lover of our Souls! It healed the leper. It heals us.

The Saga of the Coconut Macaroons (Look Up)

by TerryLema June 25, 2023

I was thinking about my mother this morning. Because of her mental and emotional problems, she was often a difficult personality. She was intelligent and musically talented, but her one prominent trait was that she thought the world revolved around her. We did not know at the time that there was a label for that trait–narcissism.

As she aged, my mother’s hearing worsened but she would not get hearing aids. That often caused her to not only not hear what was being said, but to mistake what she heard. She once told me that she threw out all her pork chops because she heard on the radio that eating pork gave you “Amtraks” (anthrax).

But as I thought about her this morning, my favorite story of her old age was the “Saga of the Macaroons.” For some reason, my mother became enthralled with coconut macaroons a few years before she died. They were always part of her grocery order, and she ate them every day, many times a day.

One day she called me in a panic and said that she had gone grocery shopping and there must have been a “run on coconut macaroons” as there were none on the shelves. I asked her if she was sitting in her motorized cart while she shopped, and she said yes. I asked her if she only looked at the shelves at eye level from her cart. She said yes. I asked her if she “looked up” to see them on the upper shelves (where they were usually kept). She said no.

Looking up is extremely important. In Luke 21, Jesus told His disciples about the things that would happen prior to His return. He described signs of the times and then gave a warning. “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” [Luke 21:28 NKJV]

My mother missed having her coconut macaroons because she failed to “look up.” We can miss far more if we fail to “look up” from this life and see Jesus.

Email Inbox

by TerryLema June 24, 2023

My mornings are routine. Coffee. Blanket (if the house is cold). Find my rocker/recliner and take and record my blood glucose levels and my blood pressure. Then I open my computer. I send out and post my daily devotions (via email, website, and Facebook). Then I check my bank account.

That is my morning routine. When it is completed, I open my two email accounts. From there it is anything but routine. For example, this morning … ZipRecruiter (not sure how I got enrolled in that) found several jobs they think I might like—one working in a warehouse.

My daily recipe was for several kinds of soups and chilies (it is supposed to be close to 90 degrees today)

I got an update from my congressman and first “dibs” on a new melt at Panera. I can also find discounts on liposuction, new windows, bankcards, and knee pain relief. And, of course, there are the usual phishing emails that are attempting to steal my money.

But each morning there are a couple emails that I look forward to opening. My daily Bible verses. Today, I was reminded that “The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.” [Psalm 91:1 HCSB]

And Paul prayed this: “that [my] love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, so that [I] can approve the things that are superior and can be pure and blameless in the day of Christ.” [Philippians 1:9-10 HCSB]

What better way to spend the day than growing in the knowledge that I live under the protection of the Most High … and dwell in the shadow of the Almighty! Amen.

Focusing on the Unseen (Part Four)

by TerryLema June 23, 2023

Everything in God’s Creation is designed to give testimony to His eternal existence. That is why everything in the “world system” strives to grab our attention away from God and point it toward the temporary.

The world and the enemy of our soul want our attention – even our own rebellious nature wants our attention. And if we are focused on those things, we miss the things on which God wants us to concentrate.

Paul reminds us at the end of 2Corinthians 4 of the need to focus on the unseen.

“So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” [2Corinthians 4:18 HCSB]

We used to have a cat that would chase a dot of light all over the room. It would try to pounce on it on the floor, jump at it on the walls – never catching it, of course, because there was nothing there to catch!

Humans are a lot like that cat. We love the bright and shiny, the new and improved. We want the latest and greatest. Wave something glittery in our direction and we turn our heads to follow it – even though it is only a temporary spark containing nothing substantive.

God, however, wants us to focus on Him and on things of eternal nature and glory. We may not see them with earthly eyes, but our spiritual eyes behold them. They have an eternal weight of glory and will keep us throughout our life on earth.

Those Old Earthen Jars (Part Three)

by TerryLema June 22, 2023

One of the most profound experiences I had was at the Boise Art Museum (BAM) looking at jars. Yes, Pots. (I have told this story many times.)

The artist had blown jars of various shapes and sizes and covered them with layers of paint in different colors. Then he took a knife and scored them exposing the various colors creating woodland scenes with trees, animals and sky. They were beautiful, even more so because he added light inside which shown through the scoring.

Every place where the artist had dug deep with his knife, the light was bright. The deeper the cut, the brighter the light. As I stood there looking at these jars and watching the video about how they were made, I saw a visual representation of a verse in 2 Corinthians 4.

“Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.” [vs 4:7 HCSB]

We have the treasure of the New Covenant within us. We have the light of Christ within us. We have the Holy Spirit within us. All that creates an “extraordinary power” from God. And because of that power, Paul goes on and once again reminds us that – We Do Not Give Up!

“Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.” [2Corinthians 4:16-17 HCSB]

This old earth jar may be falling apart, but boy, what is inside (that extraordinary power from God) is an absolutely incomparable eternal treasure!

We Do Not Give Up (Part Two)

by TerryLema June 21, 2023

Yesterday I wrote about the New Covenant sealed by Christ’s blood at the cross and our ministry of boldness that comes through the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit. [2Corinthians 3:7-18]

Paul goes on in Chapter 4 to remind us of something very important – two things of note. The first is that there is no quitting in the life of the believer. No matter how tough life gets, no matter the opposition from the world, the devil, even our own rebellious nature – We Do Not Give Up!

“Therefore, since we have this ministry because we were shown mercy, we do not give up.” [2Corinthians 4:1 HCSB]

The second thing of note is the core reason we do not give up – We Are Not Proclaiming Ourselves But Jesus Christ As LORD.

“For we are not proclaiming ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves because of Jesus. For God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.” [4:5-6 HCSB]

When we offer our witness, our testimony to the world, it is not centered in our own accomplishments, strengths, holiness, or wisdom. It is firmly grounded in Jesus Christ as LORD. What we have, what we have done, what we know is all because God shone His light in our hearts. It is the knowledge of His Glory that changed our lives and will change others.

We point our lives toward the face of Christ Jesus – and we point others in the same direction. Not toward us (which would give us all kinds of reasons to quit!), but toward Him, the One Who gave Himself for us. Amen.
