We Had to Celebrate

by TerryLema August 28, 2023

“But we had to celebrate and rejoice [be glad], because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” [Luke 15:32 HCSB]

This is the ending of the Parable of the Prodigal Son.  The father was speaking to his eldest son, who did not want to see or attend a celebration given for his younger brother – the one who had squandered his inheritance and now had returned home destitute and needy.

The father, however, had never lost hope that his son would return.  He had never stopped loving him.  Now that the boy had returned to the father’s embrace it did not matter what he had done or where he had gone or how much he had lost.  It only mattered that he was home.

We had to celebrate and be glad ….   The return of the lost demands a celebration.  It commands us to be glad.  Even the angels in heaven rejoice over the return of the lost, and God, Himself, rejoices over us with singing.  [Zephaniah 3:17]

How can we not join in the celebration and be glad, especially when we realize we were the lost and now we are the found.  We are saved!  I love the quote below from A. W. Tozer.  I paraphrase it often—if God never answers another prayer or does another thing for me, it doesn’t matter because He has saved me.  I will be glad!

“Sometimes I go to God and say, ‘God, if Thou dost never answer another prayer while I live on this earth, I will still worship Thee as long as I live and in the ages to come for what Thou hast done already.’ God’s already put me so far in debt that if I were to live one million millenniums, I couldn’t pay Him for what He’s done for me.”   ― A.W. Tozer

The Temple

by TerryLema August 27, 2023

2 Chronicles 7 tells of the dedication of Solomon’s Temple. “When Solomon finished praying, fire descended from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. The priests were not able to enter the Lord’s temple because the glory of the Lord filled the temple of the Lord. All the Israelites were watching when the fire descended and the glory of the Lord came on the temple.” [vs1-2 HCSB]

How glorious that must have been. I cannot even imagine what it must have been like to the onlookers at that moment when the fire came down and the glory of the LORD filled that temple.

But the Bible speaks of another temple. “For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: ‘I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” [2Corinthians 6:16 HCSB]

And again, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?” [1Corinthians 6:19 HCSB]

And it speaks of another fire as well. “Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit….” [Acts 2:2-4a HCSB]

As glorious as it was when the glory of the LORD filled Solomon’s temple, how much more glorious is it when God fills us – living temples — with the power of His Holy Spirit.

To the Praise of His Glory

by TerryLema August 26, 2023

Recently a young woman that I have come to highly regard read a verse out of Ephesians 1.  “[The Holy Spirit] is the payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory.” [vs14 HCSB]

She spoke briefly about that phrase … “to the praise of His glory.” She spoke about how we are to live our lives … everything we do, even enduring difficulties and hardships “to the praise of His glory.”

I have thought about that phrase ever since that morning. I love what Matthew Henry wrote about it. “For this we were made, and for this we were redeemed; this is the great design of our Christianity, and of God in all that he has done for us: unto the praise of his glory, Eph. 1:14. He intends that his grace and power and other perfection should by this means become conspicuous and illustrious, and that the sons of men should magnify him.”

We are the living ‘praise’ of His glory. Our lives are to be conspicuous and illustrious as Matthew Henry says. They to be on display in this world as they reflect all God has done for us. That is why we were made. That is why we were redeemed. That is the great design of our Christianity.

Yes, God loves us abundantly. Yes, He wants to gather His children to Himself. But we are not to be selfish in our salvation. We have a purpose. That is to live lives that are “to the praise of His glory” so that others might also come to salvation.

Disciplined!

by TerryLema August 25, 2023

I went to a prayer meeting this morning. (I wrote this on 8/17). God’s presence felt so precious while we prayed.

I had just prayed something personal to me, quietly so only God and I could hear. Then a sweet woman with a quiet voice got up and prayed His answer back to me. One little sentence that stood out for my ears only to hear.

It was such a precious time when the hour was over. I just wanted to sit there and bask in the LORD’s presence.

I had missed the last three Thursday morning prayer meetings (infusion, doc appointment and not feeling well), so I was so glad to be back in the house of the LORD. There is something that lifts you outside yourself when you gather with others and pray. There is something that touches deep in the soul when you pray for others.

“Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and disciplined for prayer.”  [1Peter 4:7 HCSB]

The above verse is from a section of Peter’s first letter. That section is labeled “End-Time Ethics” in my translation. We are definitely in difficult times. I do not know if we are at the very end of times, but we sure are getting close if we gauge that by what is going on in our world.

These “end-times” that we live in require prayer for survival. And not just for survival, but to have all we need to thrive as disciples of Christ Jesus. And prayer requires discipline because every weapon the enemy has will be aimed at those who pray.

We must be serious … and we must be disciplined … and we must pray. Nothing less will do.

Running Late

by TerryLema August 24, 2023

We went to a different church a couple Sundays ago. There were some people gathered in the lobby in groups talking to each other. We were a bit early, so we grabbed a couple donuts and Bob grabbed a coffee. Then we sat in the lobby while we polished off our breakfast.

When we entered the sanctuary, we spent a few minutes talking to the usher at the door. Then when the countdown clock hit 1 minute until the start, we quickly chose our seats. We had a wide choice. Every chair was empty.

There were a couple men in the sound booth, and eight people on the platform ready to start song service. During the first song two more people took their seats. Others came in over the next 30 minutes. As they did, I remembered something Pastor Jim said. He said that people who are consistently late to services show a disrespect for God.

When that song service started, Jesus was there. He said that “where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there among them.” [Matthew 18:20 HCSB]

We were gathered in His name. He arrived on time. The worship team began singing songs of praise to Him. The four of us standing in the sanctuary were praising Him. He was there.

I wondered as I watched people drift in if they realized how disrespectful that was. Not just to the worship team, but to the LORD Himself. I wonder what their reaction would be if they could have seen Him with their natural eyes waiting for them to come into His presence.

All Power

by TerryLema August 23, 2023

One of the best chapters in the Bible is Revelation 19.  It begins, “After this I heard something like the loud voice of a vast multitude in heaven, saying: Hallelujah! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God….” [vs 1 HCSB]

Then verse 6 continues, “Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying: Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign!” [HCSB]

Then the wonderful description of the Return of the Word of God in verses 11 to 16 ends with, “He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” [HCSB]

I heard someone say recently that God showed up in power. I immediately thought, “when does God ever show up without power?”

When our God is with us, His power is present. Power belongs to our God. He is our LORD GOD, the Almighty. He reigns. He is King of Kings and LORD of Lords. He is Omnipotent. Any power apart from Him is delegated power by Him.

If we do not sense or see His power in operation, it is because we are refusing to acknowledge it, or grown too calloused of heart to surrender to it, or are too focused on our own expectations or plans to see His plans.

But when God arrives in our midst, His power arrives also.

Elderly Lady

by TerryLema August 22, 2023

I drove by the old The Way (the new Christian Faith Center [CFC] Middleton) the other day. There was one man working there and the doors were open. I considered just driving on (for about two seconds) and then my curiosity got the better of me.  I stopped the car and got out.

The man working on the flooring invited me in to see all the changes that had been made. We talked for a little while – he too is a CFC member.

When I got home, I told Bob all about the changes I saw. He decided he wanted to see them for himself, so he got in the car and drove over. When he returned, he said he asked the man if many people were stopping to see the building. The gentlemen told Bob that just a little while ago, an “elderly lady” stopped to check things out.

Wait? What? An ELDERLY LADY? I have considered myself an older woman, even a senior citizen. But somehow an ELDERLY LADY seems—well—old. I know I am rounding the corner towards 77 (in December). I know I have far fewer days in front than I have behind. I know my body challenges me every time I want it to do something. But … ELDERLY LADY?

I guess I must admit that I see that ELDERLY LADY when I pass a mirror. I have become “accepting” of that reflection (sort of). Accepting, because I know that is not truly who I am. Psalm 103 reminds me that it all changed that day in August 1973 when I surrendered my life to Christ.  Now the true part of me has been renewed.

“My soul, praise Yahweh, and all that is within me, praise His holy name. My soul, praise the Lord, and do not forget all His benefits. He forgives all [my] sin; He heals all [my] diseases. He redeems [my] life from the Pit; He crowns [me] with faithful love and compassion. He satisfies [me] with goodness; [my] youth is renewed like the eagle.”  [Psalm 103:1-5 HCSB]

ELDERLY LADY on the outside. My youth renewed on the inside. Praise His Holy Name!

Which Will it Be?

by TerryLema August 21, 2023

“When a man is born from above, the life of the Son of God is born in him.  He can either starve that life or nourish it.”  –Oswald Chambers

I love it when Oswald Chambers in “My Utmost for His Highest” throws in a quote that zings my thought processes.  He did that again … we can either starve the life of the Son of God born in us or nourish it.

Jesus said, “’I am the bread of life,’ Jesus told them. ‘No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again.’” [John 6:35 HCSB]

We are also reminded in the LORD’s Prayer that we are to ask our Heavenly Father to give us our daily bread.  It seems we easily pray for those physical provisions from the Lord’s Hands that we need in this life.

But above those daily physical provisions, we must seek nourishment for our spiritual lives as well, or they will wither just as readily as our physical ones will wither without daily food. We can literally starve the life of the Son of God in us until we become so weak that we succumb to the enemy’s assaults and the world’s affections.

Jesus said that as the Bread of Life, the ones who comes to Him will never go hungry.  Yes, we come originally and receive eternal life.  But we must also come continually … daily … and seek Him to feed the abundant life He wants to give.

We only remain strong and vital spiritually if we nourish the life of the Son of God in us through daily communion with Him in prayer, through praise and worship, by daily reading the Word of God, and through contact with brothers and sisters who love Him.

Our LORD Reigns!

by TerryLema August 20, 2023

Want to begin your day great today? Stop right now and read Psalm 97.

“The LORD reigns! Let the earth rejoice: let the many coasts and islands be glad!” [vs 1 HCSB]

What a great beginning! And that great beginning is followed by a great ending.

“You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of His godly ones; He rescues them from the power of the wicked. Light dawns for the righteous, gladness for the upright in heart. Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones and praise His holy name.” [vss 10-12 HCSB]

God protects the lives of His faithful children.  He delivers them from the power of the wicked.  Promises of protection, assurance, security, and deliverance flow from Him.  Then the psalmist really makes my heart sing in thanksgiving … “Light dawns for the righteous, gladness for the upright in heart.”

God gives light.  God gives joy and gladness.  Light. Joy. Gladness. Out of the darkness and into the Light.  Grief for a night, but joy in the morning.

This is only possible because The Lord Reigns!  Because our God is the God of All-Power, we have the assurance … the eternal assurance … that the Light of Christ in us will never be snuffed out by something or someone stronger than Him.  The joy He gives us will echo through our lives not just for the few decades we abide on this earth but will echo through the Halls of Heaven for all eternity.

Rejoice Christian – Your Lord Reigns!  And that will never change!

The Season!

by TerryLema August 19, 2023

Football season is upon us. Some of us have been looking forward to it since the end of the last one … others have been dreading it.  (As a friend said, “Not everyone can like football, someone has to serve the snacks!”)

We’ve been watching the pre-season games.  While football purists don’t care for pre-season, I rather like it.  It’s mostly the newly recruited players, the young men trying to make the teams, putting their all out there hoping to gather the attention of the coaches and survive the inevitable cuts that must happen as the teams are paired down to regulated size.

Watching these young men play hard for their future inspires me.  Sometimes it is glorious and you know they are going to succeed.  Other times it is sad as injuries are incurred which dictate the end of their season or career before it has even begun. (Thursday night we watched as two players were carted off the field with injuries. Thankfully, both are going to be okay.)

I think the characteristic that dominates in pre-season is hope.  Each one is hopeful that success will come their way.  Each is hopeful that they will have a bright future.

Hope.  For these young men hope springs out of their talents and opportunities.  For us, hope is from a different source.  Paul began his first letter to Timothy by identifying the source of his hope: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope.”  [1 Tim 1:1 NIV]

Christ Jesus, our hope.  It is not our own talents, nor the opportunities granted by others which secures our hope.  It is Christ Jesus.  He is the sure foundation for our hope.  All the blessings of God are not wishful thinking.  They are a sure hope, secured by our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us be thankful today that our hope does not rest on our own talents or capabilities. Let us be thankful today that our sure hope is secured by Christ Jesus our LORD.
