H3

by TerryLema April 14, 2024

Bob and I were talking about old times the other night while we were watching the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game. After all these years he was surprised to learn that I played basketball in high school, and even more surprised to learn that I tore the ligaments in my knee and ended up in a cast and on crutches for six weeks.

In 1962 we had no backpacks. We carried all our books and binders in our arms from home, from class to class, and back home again. That is not something you can do on crutches.

The semester this happened, I had been chosen by my typing teacher to teach typing to a class of students with disabilities. The idea was that it would improve eye-to-hand coordination. Their classroom was in the back of the school in a portable known as H3.

Kids can be cruel and those who were seen entering H3 were immediately labeled with labels no one should ever wear. Most of my “friends” at the time joined in.

On my first day back at school on crutches, it wasn’t my friends who met me at the bus, but one of my “H3” typing students, grabbing my books and escorting me to my class. At the end of class, another met me and escorted me to the next class. That happened every period. At the end of school, the last one carried my books to the bus.

For six weeks, these kids carried out the same self-assigned tasks. After 62 years I seldom think about my “friends,” but I’ll never forget the kindness shown me by my “H3” typing class. Amazing how long a simple kindness is remembered.

“Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” [Colossians 3:12 HCSB]

And Not Only That …

by TerryLema April 13, 2024

I am walking through the first half of Romans 5, verses 1-11. God reminded me that I needed to again remember all He has done for me through the salvation provided in the death and resurrection of His Dear Son.

“For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” [vs 6-9 HCSB]

Look at those descriptions … ungodly, sinners (and a few verses later … enemies). That was me. And you. And all of mankind. But while we were those things, look at what God did. He proved His love for us. And Christ confirmed that love by dying for us. But there is even more …

“Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him.” [vs 10-11]

Now we are no longer ungodly, sinners, enemies. We are “much more then.” We are His children, reconciled to Him as Father God, saved in the resurrection life of Christ Jesus.

0I guess, I should back away from my bad attitude and rejoice instead in all God has done for me and all that is mine in Him. PTL

Therefore, since …

by TerryLema April 12, 2024

My attitude lately has not been all it should be. I feel like I am not responding well to physical challenges, nor the mental and emotional ones. So God, in His mercy, reminded me of all that I have in my salvation through Christ Jesus my LORD. He did that by taking me to Romans 5. I am now following His lead and taking a walk-through those first 11 verses once again.

“Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith ….” [verse 1 HCSB]

I have been declared righteous by the faith I placed in Christ Jesus. That is a done deal. He did all the work, and I simply surrendered my life to Him. As glorious as that is … and believe me that is glorious(!), I have even more.

“…we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” [vs2]

I have peace with Him, access to His grace, and the hope of the glory of God in my life. But there is still more …

“And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.” [vs3-4]

I can rejoice in troubling afflictions because I have the assurance that they are producing something in me. I am developing endurance, proven character, and hope.

And what a hope! “This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” [vs5]

Thank you for the reminder. But there is more, the other half tomorrow. PTL

How Much More!

by TerryLema April 11, 2024

I woke up on Monday after a rough night. I could not get comfortable no matter which way I turned. After five years of steroids I don’t sleep well anyway, so when the little sleep I am used to is interrupted, I am not a happy camper. In other words, I am grumpy and wallowing in a bit of self-pity.

As I opened my computer and went through the usual morning routine of sending out and posting devotions, checking the bank, my email, etc., I found the following verse in my verse of the day. “For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life!” [Romans 5:10 HCSB]

I sat there confronted by one of my favorite chapters in the New Testament. The first half of Romans Chapter 5 (verses 1-11) always brings joy to my soul. I love going through verse by verse. So, there I was, sitting in my chair, grumpy and hurting … and God reminds me of the “how much more!” of my salvation.

One thing about the Bible, which makes it far different from every other book, is that it is not only read by us, but it also reads us. And that morning Scripture read me.

I had a choice, to remain in my bad attitude, or to allow the “how much more” God provides to guide me to a better one.

I think I will take a stroll in Romans 5:1-11 and remember “how much more” I have in Him. PTL

My Favorite Title

by TerryLema April 10, 2024

I was talking with someone recently about titles. The world is hung up on titles and rankings, but I do not think the LORD is overly impressed by titles. I also do not think that when we get to the rewards ceremony in heaven that God is going to rank us by our titles. I think His criteria for rewards is very different.

“Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength.” “Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” [Ecclesiastes 9:10, Colossians 3:17 HCSB]

That said, I admit to having a favorite title. I was in a traditional denomination when first saved staying there for nearly six years until it became apparent that I needed to leave. That meant taking my children out of that church’s school and finding another place for them.

I found Trinity Christian Schools and the principal there was kind enough to make room. I was so grateful to them that I asked God to use me in any way that would serve them. I told the principal that I wanted to help.

The school had no cafeteria. The principal asked if I could figure out a way to provide the kids with lunch once a week, using only the tiny faculty room and mini-kitchen. I ended up doing “Hot-dog Thursday’s.” I cooked hot dogs for hundreds of kids, brought chips and drinks, and brought in home-made cookies and cupcakes for dessert. Every Thursday lunch, with the help of some of the moms, we served the kids.

I got to hug and bless lots of children as they came through the line. And when they saw me in church on Sundays, they would come running to get another hug from the “Hot-Dog Lady!”

To this day, it is that “title” that I cherish the most.

I’m Old!

by TerryLema April 9, 2024

I have been blessed to have some great doctors through the years. I had my primary physician for almost 20 years before she retired. She referred me to an internist that she had heard was very good.

My new doctor is from a Slavic nation and has the cutest accent. She is probably in her late 30’s, blond, bubbly, and very compassionate. She is also the same kind of physician I had before in that she listens and engages me in the discussion of my care. Not all do that!

The other day I had my 3-month checkup and a lot had changed since the last one. I found out I do not have adrenal insufficiency (thank you LORD), am off steroids, and the high blood pressure meds. She asked me if any of the auto-immune disease (PMR) pain had returned and I said, “No, just the normal old age things.”

She threw her head back and laughed, then said, “Usually I am the one that needs to remind people they are old! You already know!”

My turn to laugh. It would really be difficult to not know that I am old. The face in the mirror with the wrinkles, the knees that predict the weather three days before the weather man, the cane, hearing aids and white hair all tell me, “You’re old!”

But … my God, my precious Lord, has given a promise. It is a promise He made to the descendants of Jacob, but it is also a promise to all those who love Him …. “I have cared for you since you were born. Yes, I carried you before you were born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”  [Isaiah 46:3b-4 NLT]

Amen

Favorite Time of the Week

by TerryLema April 8, 2024

I love going to church on Sunday mornings. I love the energy of the worship service. I love listening to the truth found in the Scriptures through the messages. I love hugging and laughing with the team of volunteers who gather before service. I love greeting people as they come through the doors and praying with people at service end.

But as much as I love all that, it is still my “second-favorite” time of the week.

My favorite time is Thursday mornings from 9 to 10 AM. That is when we gather for prayer.

I walk into that building and greet Pastor Laura. She sets up the music playing softly and the screen in the front of the church with prayer emphasis for that hour.

I find a chair and sit down. My body won’t let me kneel anymore, but my heart still kneels before my LORD. I pray. I worship. I sit quietly. I rest in Him. I sense His presence. I am at peace with my Savior and LORD. It is the very best time of my entire week.

Usually there are just a few of us. I often wonder why the place isn’t packed. To be given the opportunity to sit with the LORD for an hour and quietly share my heart with Him … and Him share His heart with me, well, that is a bit of heaven on earth.

“Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” [Colossians 4:2 NLT]

Convenient?

by TerryLema April 7, 2024

Most of us are familiar with Paul’s instruction to Timothy in his second letter. “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.” [2 Tim 4:2 NIV]

When I read through my Bible each year, I use a different translation, sometime the NKJV, other times the NIV or American Standard or NLT. This year I’m reading the Holman Christian Standard Bible.  When I came to 2 Timothy 4:2, I really enjoyed how their translators phrased it.  “Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct and encourage with great patience and teaching.”

“Persist in it whether convenient or not.” We are a convenience-driven people. We are surrounded with convenience. We have convenience stores; prepared food; drive-thru fast food and drive-thru coffee shops; one-day shipping and on-line everything!  We don’t even have to leave our chairs to turn the thermostats up or down, lock our doors, or turn on our music.

Being prepared and persistent in proclaiming the Good News, however, is rarely convenient. It requires study time, experience with the Giver of the Good News, and a heart that is willing to let everything else go just to bring one soul to Christ Jesus.

Seeking the presence of the LORD in our churches is not convenient either. It requires our time, diligence, and desperation to see a spiritual awakening.

I wonder, when we appear before the Lord Jesus at the end of our lives if “it just wasn’t convenient” will be an acceptable excuse for not persisting in sharing the Good News?

Complete!

by TerryLema April 6, 2024

Years ago, I spotted an odd sign.  It said, “$795 Complete Cremation” and advertised a local funeral home.  My first thought then was, “so if $795 gets you a complete cremation, does $500 get you an incomplete one?” (The sign is still there but now the cost is $995.)

That had me thinking about that word “complete,” so I checked it out in my concordance. What I found was that Paul used it a lot.  He left that special word for Archippus at the end of his letter to the Colossians.  “Tell Archippus: ‘See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.’” [Col 4:17 NIV]

Some other translations use the word “fulfill” instead of “complete,” but both mean the same thing. In other words, “Archippus, finish the job God gave you!”

Finish the job … complete the work.  We know from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians that we were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  [2:10]

God created us for a purpose. That purpose is both the same and yet different for all of us.  The “same” part is that we are called to worship our Lord and Savior in spirit and in truth.

The “different” part is how that worship is manifested in our good deeds. Some of us are called to do things publicly and some are called to do things behind the scenes. It doesn’t matter, our good deeds are uniquely ours, prepared individually by God for us.

Complete the job we must. I don’t want to stand in the presence of my Lord and King having left anything undone. Amen.

Repent!

by TerryLema April 5, 2024

Repent! Gk: Metanoeo:  It means “to perceive afterwards, implying to change.” Think of it as making a “Spiritual U-Turn.”

If you read Jesus’ messages to the seven churches in Revelation Chapters 2 & 3, you will see the word “repent” used eight times. The only churches not called upon to repent are Smyrna and Philadelphia.  Poor Ephesus and Thyatira are each told twice to “repent!”

Whether we recognize it or not, the call to repent is still very much alive today.  It is a call for repentance of both personal and corporate sin. As seekers for God’s presence to awaken the church, there must be a strong recognition of sin.

While the sin of our nation may not be mine personally, it is mine by association. I am a Christian and I am a citizen.  Just as Nehemiah, Samuel, Daniel, Moses, and other intercessors identified with their nation in their day – and interceded in repentance – so must we if we want to see a spiritual awakening.

Repentance, as I said, requires a convicting awareness of sin. Unfortunately, we do not talk much about sin anymore. We talk about personal choices and discuss gray areas of behavior and attitudes. Sin and obedience are words that are disappearing from our vocabulary – even in the church!

It’s time to resurrect them, beloved. If we don’t have an awareness of what it means to obey God, or a conviction about the consequences of disobeying God (sin), we will not have a spiritual awakening.  Honestly, I’m tired of slumbering through life.

To my own heart I say, Awaken! Repent!
