No Compromise!

by TerryLema June 18, 2020

The third church Jesus addresses is the church at Pergamos and to me it is the saddest of all. It is the compromising church. It is the church that has turned a blind eye to the idolatry and sexual immorality that exists in its midst. This is the church that decided to live just like the culture around them (and if anything, our current culture can be defined with those words, idolatry and sexual immorality).

“There are those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.” [Rev 2:14 NKJV]

Perhaps more than any other, this church defines what we have seen in recent decades. At the turn of this last century, churches adopted the entertainment model. Sunday services became all about keeping people entertained – no more boring Bible-based teaching where people had to actually pay attention. We tried to respond to that old complaint, “church is boring,” not by turning people on fire for God, but by providing theatre and amusement.

When we did that, we morphed from self-sacrificing servants into self-absorbed consumers. The Holy Spirit and along with Him, holiness, was driven from our midst. We no longer “offended” others by reminding them that God calls us to a higher standard than our culture. We quit talking about sin and started talking about self-fulfillment and prosperity.

The result is that we live in a way that looks exactly like the people who do not have God in their lives.

“What has the church gained if it is popular but there is no conviction, no repentance, no power?” A. W. Tozer

No Vaccine Against Persecution

by TerryLema June 17, 2020

The second church Jesus spoke of in the opening chapters of the book of Revelation is the church of Smyrna, identified as the persecuted church. While Americans may think we are being persecuted because the churches have been closed down, I would say differently. We have not yet experienced persecution. We may be seeing the beginning of opposition to the church in our nation, but we are far from being persecuted.

That is not the case if we look beyond our borders. The list of nations where actual persecution and martyrdom is found is long and it is getting longer. Persecution of believers is quite common in many places, people ripped from their homes and martyred, pastors beaten and imprisoned, churches driven underground. We cannot even begin to compare our situation to theirs.

Jesus, however, gave a warning to the church of Smyrna, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death.” [Rev 2:10 NKJV]

While we have not seen persecution in our nation except in extremely rare instances, that does not mean we are immune. There is no vaccine against future persecution. It could come – it probably will come.

What must we do to be prepared?  We can do all the human things, vote, be active in our local communities, etc., but that will not help much when thrown into prison or tested with tribulation. To be faithful until death requires one thing … that we have a true vision of and relationship with our Almighty God. Once again, we go back to Christ Jesus in Revelation 1:12-18.

He is the Living One. He holds the keys to death and Hades. He is Almighty God, First and Last. His eyes are blazing fire. He has a double-edged sword in His mouth. When He dwells in us by the power of His Holy Spirit, we will not fear anything man can do to us!

We Have Sinned!

by TerryLema June 16, 2020

Men and women of God have often born the burden of repentance of sin for their people. Daniel, chapter 9, contains the prayer of Daniel, considered by God as one of the three most righteous of all men, Noah, Job and Daniel. [Ezekiel 14:12-14]

Daniel’s prayer contains three words, repeated four times, that we should note. “O LORD, we and our kings, our princes and our fathers are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.” [Dan 9:8]

Those three noteworthy words are, “we have sinned.”

Daniel did not exclude himself from the sins of his people—even though others might have excluded him. He remained righteous as a young man after taken into captivity by refusing to defile himself with foods forbidden to Jews. He remained righteous as an old man when being forbidden to pray, he opened his window as always and prayed to His God. That faithfulness got him a visit into the lion’s den.

Still, as he prayed, he included himself in the sins of his people and took responsibility for the judgment of God upon a nation that had long since strayed from loyalty to Israel’s God.

What must we do as Christians in our nation in our time? I think we all need to stop and look around. Who are we blaming for what is happening – others? Who do we blame for the slaughter in our streets, for the sacrifices of our unborn in our cities, for the prejudices and need among the most vulnerable?

Maybe, like Daniel, we need to hit our knees in repentance and say to our LORD and KING, “we have sinned.” We have gone about our lives with blinders on. We have lost our first love and need to repent. We have sought our own good. We have been concerned with what we have and what we want. It has been all about us and that does not model our Savior … He was never concerned with Himself. He was all about us. He gave it all. Maybe it is time we do likewise.

Father, I have sinned …. I have lost my first love.

IS IT LOST?

by TerryLema June 15, 2020

After John saw Jesus, standing there in His splendor and glory, Jesus commanded him to write about the things which “are.” Jesus then gave seven messages to seven churches. I am sure you have often studied these messages, but maybe we need to just look at them briefly and see if they apply to all that is happening around us today. We have pretty much compromised our vision of Christ Jesus in our time, and I bet we have done the same with His standards for the church.

He addressed the Church of Ephesus first. He notes their works, labors, discernment, perseverance, and patience. Then He makes a most remarkable statement. In the midst of everything this church does, they have forgotten to love. “You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” [Rev 2:4-5]

A loveless church—how can that even be possible, yet it is.  God gave Israel two great commandments; Jesus reasserted them. “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  [Matt 22:37-40, Deuteronomy 6:5]

We are to love. But how are we to love? Love must be more than our handshakes, hugs, smiles when we walk into our church buildings. Any group of people can produce handshakes, hugs, and smiles, but the world is not moved nor is it changed by human-based love or actions.

We will only change the world when we return to the sacrificial, all encompassing, unconditional love that Jesus demands – agape love, God’s love. That is the love we have forsaken, and if we want to see our culture, our society, our nation survive – and thrive – then that is the love we must return to.

Our Glorious King!

by TerryLema June 14, 2020

“I hold the keys of death and Hades.” [Rev 1:18]

Those are the words of Christ our King. They open the great revelation given to John on the Isle of Patmos. After Jesus spoke those words, He commanded John to write what he had just seen – that marvelous vision of God Almighty. Only then was he to record the things that are “now” and the things that are “to come.” [1:19]

I think we spend far too much time on the things that are “to come” and not enough time on the things that are “now” or our glorious King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Should we take warning from the things that are “to come.” Certainly. But what good is it if we recognize the “Anti-Christ” but lose sight of the Christ?

I remember my daughter once worked for a bank. It was during a time when our currency did not have all the bells and whistles contained in each bill to show if it was legitimate. They had to learn to recognize the counterfeits by sight. They did not do that by studying the counterfeits (there were far too many to learn each one.) They did it by studying the original, the legitimate USA bills.

We may be able to recognize the arrival of the Anti-Christ by studying the things that are “to come,” but we will be far more able (and far more blessed) by knowing who our God, our LORD, our King is, and by having an intimate relationship with him.

Our God holds the keys of death and Hades. He died on a cross for our sins. He took our punishment. He rose. He ascended to the Right Hand of the Father. And in His Hands are the keys of death, the grave, and hell. No one will ever be strong enough to take those keys from Him. So, beloved, visit once again that opening in Revelation 1:12-18. Seek our God. Seek His face, and you won’t ever be fooled by a counterfeit.

HE WILL NOT BOW!

by TerryLema June 13, 2020

When John saw Jesus on the Isle of Patmos, he was overwhelmed. He said, “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” [Rev 1:17]

Does that remind you of anyone?  When Isaiah saw the LORD, high and lifted up, he cried out: “Woe to me! (Or cursed am I!) I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” [Isa 6:5]

That is the reaction of men and women when they meet the true God in all His glory. I have to wonder – is that the reaction we have when we think of God Almighty, when we worship our Savior, LORD and King Jesus.

I would say, “No, it’s not.” In fact, our generation has allowed a false image of our LORD to flourish. People think our God is too kind to send anyone to hell, too weak to enforce His holiness. They have made Jesus bland, have taken out the parts of him they like, “The Lamb,” but ignored the parts they do not like, “The Lion.”

They filter His words, seeking what best suits their agendas, while ignoring the words that reproach or demand repentance or change or holiness (or speak of damnation and hell).

That warped view of our LORD has even invaded the church. We no longer fall on our faces before Him. We do not acknowledge our unclean lips or sin-filled lives. We think we can do anything … and grace will just be our contingency.

Well, Church, our LORD is Almighty. He will not bow nor acquiesce to our jaded image of Him. No matter what we try to make Him, He is still God and has never and will never change! We had better get right with Him and do it soon.

I want the LORD of Revelation Chapter 1 in my church (and in my heart) – I want Him in all our churches. And if you have forgotten what that looks like, read Revelation 1:12-18 again. Bless His Glorious Name!

The End Times – His Way

by TerryLema June 12, 2020

Christians are talking about the End Times because of what we see happening in our nation today. Perilous times have come as Paul told Timothy would happen in the last days. [1 Timothy 3:1-5]

I have seen email after email talking about the events in the Book of Revelation and applying some of those ‘prophetic revelations’ to what we see broadcast in the media each day. Everywhere we turn people are talking about globalism and the Anti-Christ, the Mark of the Beast, and other such things.

Maybe we need to back up a bit here. When John was exiled to the Isle of Patmos Jesus appeared to him and showed him what John would later record as the Book of Revelation. Jesus did not start with the Anti-Christ or the Mark of the Beast. He did two things first: 1) He gave a revelation of Himself, and 2) He spoke to the churches about what was right and what was wrong within them.  Only after that did He speak of the difficulties that would arise as God reclaims all that is His by His Authority as Creator, Redeemer, King of Kings and LORD of Lords.

If we are in the last days now – and we are certainly closer to the coming of Christ than any generation before us – then maybe, we should do it Jesus’ way. First, we need to reclaim a true vision of Him. John said we would be blessed simply by reading the Book of Revelation, so let’s start there … at the beginning.

Rev 1:12-18: “I [John] turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone ‘like a son of man,’ dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.’”

Want a double blessing today? Read that again!  Let us focus first on Christ Jesus our King. Let us do the ‘end times’ His way!

Earthen Vessels

by TerryLema June 5, 2020

Yesterday I had the amazing privilege of praying with a small group of Boise pastors, young men that I have come to appreciate and love. As we prayed, I was reminded of something that happened about a decade ago. I have probably told you this story before, but I need to tell it again this morning – as I told it yesterday to these young men.

My grandson and I attended a new exhibit at the Boise Art Museum. The artist was a glass blower who made vases, jugs, jars in all different shapes and sizes. Each vase was lighted, each one different, each one “decorated” with a lovely scene. Many were woodland scenes with tall trees, brilliant skies, flowers, and animals. I thought the scenes were painted on.

Then I watched the film as the artist created them. He fired the glass, molding each one individually, some small, some large, some in between, all differently shaped. Then he rolled them in pigment and fired each color individually, layer upon layer upon layer of colors.

But it was the final touch that has stayed with me. He put a light into each one. He took scoring knives, some wide bladed, some small and pointy and he began to “score” the vases. One swipe here that revealed a blue, another smaller revealed greens or reds or yellows. He continued to work, cutting through each pigment color until he exposed the color he wanted – and as he did so, the light in the vase became more brilliant, and a beautiful picture became visible.

As I watched I was overwhelmed remembering the verse, “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” [2 Cor 4:7]

I am retelling this story today because of two things. First, the verses that follow that verse have meaning for the church today. (“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” [vs8-9])

Secondly, I sense that the LORD is doing a little “scoring” in pastors and needs to do a little “scoring” in me. I am going to be offline for the next 7-10 days so that I may give Him time to do so as I pray and seek His wisdom.

God bless you all and see you in about a week!

Spiritual Health

by TerryLema June 4, 2020

My California kids gave me a Fitbit for my birthday. I love it. I had another cheaper brand that tracked my steps and such, but this Fitbit watch does it all, steps, exercise, heartbeat, tells me who is on the phone, shows me my email, etc.

I like to walk and get my steps in each day. That has been difficult to do in recent months because of my physical condition (and to a certain extend the mismanagement of it by a specialist.) Now I am back on meds and while I have not returned to my “old self” from last year at this time, I am increasing the distance in my almost daily walks and in my daily step count. That means I watch my Fitbit a lot each day to see how I am doing.

The other day I noticed that my step count was increasing even though I was not up walking. I was sitting in my rocker reading. Apparently, if I hold my arm a certain way, my Fitbit registers steps when all I am doing is sitting and rocking. What a delightfully easy way to get my step count up! Except, that does not do anything good for my body. It just looks good on the outside record.

Ah, LORD, are you trying to tell me something? What am I most concerned about – my outside appearance to others or the inside spiritual condition of my heart before you?

Too often we care more about how others see us than we do about what our LORD sees in our hearts. When that happens, it is good to pray David’s prayer and let God do His work in us—even though that work demands we get up and move with Him. We cannot “sit and rock” our way into spiritual health.

Ps 19:14: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.”

 Amen & Amen.
