What IF?

by TerryLema

I saw a meme on Facebook that made me think. It was simple. “What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you thanked God for today.” Oh my! I hope that made you think as much as it did me. My thoughts immediately went to the day before – “What did I thank God for yesterday?”

Were my praise and thanksgiving rich or were they poor? Did I look at the wonders around me and glorify God for His amazing creation? Did I thank Him for my salvation? My daily bread? My family and friends? My church family? Did I thank Him for His Indwelling Spirit in me? For His guidance, discipline, encouragement, and compassion? Or did I go about my merry way totally oblivious to God’s presence around me?

As I sorted through my attitude, I realized that my thanksgiving is probably greater now because of the approaching holiday. But, BUT, will it be that robust in February or June or August? I need to make certain that thanksgiving for all God has done doesn’t disappear with the passing of the season. I need to make certain that my praise and thanksgiving are for every day, no matter the date on the calendar or the circumstances that surround me, or the condition of my body.

The Psalmist invites us to “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”  [Psalm 95:1-2]

That’s an invitation for every day – not just for one special time of the year.
